APOD: Flowing Auroras Over Norway (2010 Nov 24)

Post by APOD Robot » Wed Nov 24, 2010 5:06 am

Image Flowing Auroras Over Norway

Explanation: Have you ever seen an aurora? Auroras are occurring again with increasing frequency. With the Sun being unusually dormant over the past three years, the amount of Sun-induced auroras has also been unusually low. More recently, however, our Sun has become increasingly active and exhibiting a greater abundance of sunspots, flares, and coronal mass ejections. Solar activity like this typically expels charged particles into the Solar System, some of which may trigger Earthly auroras. As this year unfolded, the above timelapse displays of picturesque auroras were captured above Tromsø, Norway. Curtains of auroral light, usually green, flow, shimmer and dance as energetic particles fall toward the Earth and ionize air molecules high up in the Earth's atmosphere. With solar maximum still in the future, there may be opportunities to see spectacular aurora personally over the next three years.

You have to fullscreen that and watch it in HD!
Just call me "geck" because "zilla" is like a last name.

No surprise.

If you just blindly disable Flash and JS, you lock yourself out of much of what the Internet offers. And the number of pages depending on one or both continues to grow. There are ways to limit the more undesirable aspects of both without completely disabling them.

Once, when I was eight or nine, in Chicago, fairly far south for aurorae. It was absolutely incredible, one of my favorite childhood memories, standing in the driveway with my mom and dad, already obsessed with space and science... my mind was blown. Part of me wants to see more, many, many more, and part of me loves the memory enough to keep it singular...

Hi! :saturn:

"Flowing Auroras Over Norway" is such a wonderful picture! I love it :D
I dream of seeing Northern Lights (or Southern Lights) in reality, one day :D Perhaps i will.
Anyway, i am afraid of what i could really see. Indeed, after having made so beautiful dreams, thanks to this picture, i am expecting to see, one day, a sky as beautiful as this one... But could i ? It might be so rare to admire such an extraordinary view :)
Have a very nice day!

Céline

Simply stunning, breathtaking videography. Doubly so for this southern boy who has never seen an aurora display in person.

I love that we have modern hardware that can capture such noiseless, clean imagery, and that there are such talented people out there making good use of it.
