APOD: Night on a Spooky Planet (2013 Oct 31)

Post by APOD Robot » Thu Oct 31, 2013 4:07 am

Image Night on a Spooky Planet

Explanation: What spooky planet is this? Planet Earth of course, on the dark and stormy night of September 12 at Hverir, a geothermally active area along the volcanic landscape in northeastern Iceland. Geomagnetic storms produced the auroral display in the starry night sky while ghostly towers of steam and gas venting from fumaroles danced against the eerie greenish light. Tonight, there is still a chance for geomagnetic storms triggered by recent solar activity, so high-latitude skygazers should beware. And ghostly shapes may dance in your neighborhood, too. Have a safe and Happy Halloween!

I don't know about the resolution of the picture however, going to the link gives more, still beautiful, pictures. I have a language problem with the site, but I think the pics are for sale.

Once again Planet Earth has inspired me, as much as The Horse Head Nebula, The Pillars of Doom, The Rings of Saturn, Mars (where the govt's hide their rusty red spy cars : - ) AND... the Curiosity Vehicle recently (2 days ago) found a Dihydrogen Monoxide Generator ! built with a technology we know absolutely nothing about...Go figure!

Not sure if joking, or ... :incredulous:

Anyway, too many people found out what dihydrogen monoxide is. You gotta use the word oxidane now.
Just call me "geck" because "zilla" is like a last name.

Oh sure you can. Too many aromatic hydrocarbons with ethanol over frozen oxidane will get your attention the next day.

The aurorae are quite beautiful!

Corona Borealis is visible to the left of the foreground geyser. Low to the horizon below Corona Borealis is bright Arcturus. The bowl of the big dipper is to the left of the geyser (with the handle hidden behind the geyser). I would guess this picture was taken around midnight on the night of 12 - 13 September 2013.
May all beings be happy, peaceful, and free.
