APOD: NGC 7841: The Smoke Nebula in Frustriaus (2013 Nov 01)

Post by APOD Robot » Fri Nov 01, 2013 4:23 am

Image NGC 7841: The Smoke Nebula in Frustriaus

Explanation: NGC 7841 is probably known as the Smoke Nebula, found in the modern constellation of Frustriaus, the frustrated astrophotographer. Only a few light-nanoseconds from planet Earth, The Smoke Nebula is not an expanding supernova remnant along the plane of our Milky Way galaxy, though it does look a lot like one. Instead it was created by flash photography of rising smoke. The apparently rich starfield is actually composed of water droplets sprayed from a plant mister by an astrophotographer grown restless during a recent stretch of cloudy weather in Sweden. A single exposure and three external flashes were triggered to capture the not-quite-cosmic snapshot.

We've officially been tricked. Remember to send treats to RJN and Jerry next year.

Hahaha I was like 'frustrarius'? Is that some kind of strange translation or interpretation of meaning?!
First looking at the picture I thought it was pointalism art, though. (No glasses in bed on phone.... Lol)
Pretty cool picture, though. Well done. Looks strikingly like a nebula!

I feel kind of bad because a week or so ago I made a post about avoiding the witch head nebula again for Halloween but recently I looked at the past 5 years of Halloweens and she's been absent for a while. What a strange thing memory can be. I had a strong recollection that the witch head was featured for at least 3 of the past 5 Halloweens but it wasn't in any, at least not for the 29th, 30th, or 31st. The only year she was featured for Halloween was in 2008 and then once on November 1st in 2012. In fact, I think I may have made a similar remark last year and it couldn't have been any more valid then. Frustrated, wrongly accused astronomers, indeed!

Oh, haha, i screwed up on the watches. Heck, i haven't had use for a watch since last century. Good thing i didn't say they make good hot chocolate :!:
Ok, Swedish, look what they do with saunas :!: And i wouldn't be surprised if some of them had some nice Swiss hot chocolate while they're in the Swedish sauna.(Time to go to bed!)

I think it has been determined that Beyond needs to brush up on his Scandinavian culture. For fun and ease I recommend this comic.

Interestingly, there are visually grouped "stars" that form strings, loops, and negative patterns just like the real thing. I did not expect that.

Göran Strand is indeed Swedish.

It is interesting to the similarity between a few very small Earthly wisps of smoke and unimaginably humongous supernova remnants like the Veil Nebula. It is certainly very interesting to discuss structural, compositional and other similarities between the little things we find on the Earth and the vast structures we can see in the sky above us.

But I don't think that today's APOD does a very good job of discussing this most fascinating relationship between the large and the small. Therefore I find this APOD - not the picture, but the presentation of it - slightly Frustrarius.

Nice one! Although the rather evenly spread "stars" immediately raised my suspicion.
Nice November Fools Day t'all!

Wow....until I read the captions, I thought it was a real nebula...and I am "Looking" for things in it...and I DID!!!!! You get what you expect, I guess..the brain and mind can totally be fooled.

Well...this is one for April Fools Day...

Way to make a totally cool picture though, very creative!

Hi all,

Very nice photo of this elusive nebula!
Anyway I think that an WtIII (Whatamium III) filter would bring a litlle more detail to the upper left part of the photo :D

Cheers,
paulo

Hmm.. I thought everyone knew that NGC 7841 is an irregular dwarf galaxy in the constellation of Fria  http://www.photoblog.com/stormfish/2012/02/15/

My first thought was this nebula looked like cigarette smoke; I didn't even notice the water droplets! After i read about it; i believe it actually is cigarette smoke! 8-) :lol2:

This was an interesting APOD. What first caught my eye was the peculiar distribution of stars in the picture. I decided to write here about it, but then of course I read the text.
- Where's Latin?
- Alas, it's out of scope.

A multi headed serpent. Must resist urge to post reference, frustriaus insueth.
