APOD: The Tail of the Hamburger Galaxy (2014 May 08)

Post by APOD Robot » Thu May 08, 2014 4:08 am

Image The Tail of the Hamburger Galaxy

Explanation: Sharp telescopic views of NGC 3628 show a puffy galactic disk divided by dark dust lanes. Of course, this deep portrait of the magnificent, edge-on spiral galaxy puts some astronomers in mind of its popular moniker, the Hamburger Galaxy. It also reveals a small galaxy nearby, likely a satellite of NGC 3628, and a faint but extensive tidal tail. The tantalizing island universe itself is about 100,000 light-years across and 35 million light-years away in the northern springtime constellation Leo. Its drawn out tail stretches for about 300,000 light-years, even beyond the left edge of the wide frame. NGC 3628 shares its neighborhood in the local Universe with two other large spirals M65 and M66 in a grouping otherwise known as the Leo Triplet. Gravitational interactions with its cosmic neighbors are likely responsible for creating the tidal tail, as well as the extended flare and warp of this spiral's disk.

I couldn't find a tail, no how, any way... until I clicked on the cosmic neighbors link. Waa-la, there it was big as day. How come it doesn't show up in the other photos??

I couldn't enlarge the picture. That's a pity. I wanted to study the emission nebulas in the dust lane, which are rarely revealed so clearly in this particular galaxy as they are in this picture.

I could see the tail, though! :D

It shows up fine. Your monitor is out of adjustment.

I don't have any adjustment (at least reasonably accessible for me), in this windows 8.1. Everything is automatic in this HP Pavilion. It even has voice operation mode, which I don't want to activate, as I may cuss it out one day and tell it to go to hell and the darn thing just may set itself on fire!

You can easily find the color-calibration-thing in the HP-Pavilion-thing by pressing Windows-button + S (the keyboard shortcut to search) and then type in 'calibrate' which should result in a search result for 'calibrate display color'.

ha-ha, yeah, right, NOT!! Doesn't work that way with this one. There's different ways to go about calibrating color on this thing. I just gotta find the basic one and start from there.
Thanks anyway, geck.

Nope!! Forget it! The color calibrations for this this thing just run around in circles telling me to click on things that I don't have. So I'm not going to mess with that much computer shooting aggravation just to be able to see a faint galaxy tail that shows up good in another picture. Now, if I can only figure out how to keep it from pestering me and sort of locking up the computer trying to get me to download a free update to windows 8.1, which, BTW, came with the computer. My .45 will take care of that, but it's rather permanent

Tidal tails, tidal streams, tidal loops, tidal bridges, tidal shells and basically all tidal features make my heart overflow with joy!!! :D

Try again, it's worth it since you look at so many astronomical images, which are pretty demanding on displays. The advanced tab in the Color Management control panel allows for important adjustments even if you have no hard display controls at all.

The only reason coders' computers work better than non-coders' computers is coders know computers are schizophrenic little children with auto-immune diseases and we don't beat them when they're bad.

It may "allow" adjustments, but the only one that I could find there, was for the borders of the tabs/pages and tray, which I've already used. Well, maybe I'll try again later.

You're in the wrong place. It's under Control Panel, and the dialog is called Color Management. It can be hard to find in the stupid default Control Panel display mode. Change the view (in the upper right) to "Small icons" instead of "Category". Now you'll see all your Control Panel tools, including "Color Management". In any view, you can type "color management" in the search box and it should get filtered out for you.

Oh, that's a shame. The link to the original image doesn't work for you? The full resolution version is glorious, with H II regions glowing like red Christmas tree lights along the dust lanes, and the ends of the disk (as seen from our perspective) the most beautiful diffuse blue glow!

NGC 3628 doesn't show up in quite so much detail through my little telescope. It's a good night when I can convince myself I see the central dust lane.
May all beings be happy, peaceful, and free.

Actually, I had no trouble getting to where I needed to go to adjust the color of the display. I just couldn't find how to bring up the color display menu when I got there. So after a lot of cussin and doin this and tryin that, all of a sudden I noticed a place to click (forget what its called) on the lower right of the screen that wasn't there before, so I clicked it. EUREKA!! I had color adjusters. A slight movement of the red one and I could see the tail of the hamburger plain as day. It's a clearer tail then the tale of how I got to where I could see it. :lol2:

Neither could I. Therefore I took the liberty of "enhancing" that part of the image because I really wanted to see it.
It's interesting how it appears to start off at a steep angle and curve away.

It is better to view this image in a dark room to see the faintest details.

Actually, I think it's best to view anything in the sky on a clear dark night. That way, you eliminate all the artificial gobbly-gook that comes from man, except the pollution in the atmosphere, of course.
