APOD: The Windmill's Moon (2015 Jan 10)

Post by APOD Robot » Sat Jan 10, 2015 5:13 am

Image The Windmill's Moon

Explanation: Seen from the Canary Island of Fuerteventura, this bright Full Moon rose at sunset. Reaching its full phase on the night of January 4/5, it was the first Full Moon of the new year and the first to follow December's solstice. Of course, in North America the first Full Moon of January has been known as the Wolf's Moon. But this Full Moon, posed in the twilight above an island of strong winds and traditional windmills, suggests another name. The telephoto image, taken at a distance from the foreground windmill, creates the dramatic comparison in apparent size for windmill and Full Moon.

My wife and I saw Mercury yesterday, on the way home from a restaurant! There was Venus, and something else, about a degree away! When I got home I looked it up, and by gum it was Mercury! I've only seen Mercury a handful of times in my life.

Same here, and never with the naked eye...too close to the trees...needed my scope with computer software, and even then some adjustments... But got my pic of it!!!! :D

Hmmm...only 3 posts, only one of which is relevant. Conclusion: moons not popular? Well, look at tomorrow's APOD!

Conclusion: It was a perfectly normal picture with nothing obvious to argue about or criticize. It was also not an especially inspiring or thought-provoking one. The epitome of nice.
Just call me "geck" because "zilla" is like a last name.
