APOD: Soyuz vs Supermoon (2016 Nov 17)

Post by APOD Robot » Thu Nov 17, 2016 5:15 am

Image Soyuz vs Supermoon

Explanation: Faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, and able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, this Soyuz rocket stands on the launch pad at Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on November 14. Beyond it rises a supermoon, but fame for exceptional feats of speed, strength, and agility is not the reason November's Full Moon was given this popular name. Instead, whenever a Full Moon shines near perigee, the closest point in its elliptical orbit around Earth, it appears larger and brighter than other more distant Full Moons, and so a supermoon is born. In fact, November's supermoon was the second of three consecutive supermoons in 2016. It was also the closest and most superest Full Moon since 1948. Meanwhile, the mild mannered Soyuz rocket is scheduled to launch its Expedition 50/51 crew to the International Space Station today, November 17.

Fascinating, the trajectory of Earthfolks' space program. Sputnik 1957! Soyus today! (Oh, yes, and inbetween, some other activity!)

You went down the lowest lane in using 'superest'; such tendencies should be suppressed.

This is a great picture, but according to Spaceflight Now, this rocket was rolled out to the pad on November 15. So, how was the picture taken on November 14th?

You went down the Lois Lane?
Supermoon by Jack Lu.
Having been a Superman fan in my youth, I can't resist... 8-)

(Searching for these images, I also came across a picture where Superman was doing a real moon... but I won't post it here.)

Not just "superest"; "most superest"! English is, without doubt, the most richest language.

Nope. Still going with English, which you can also compound indefinitely, and which has a much larger native vocabulary, as well as a more flexible grammar.

Interesting language discussion. For me, I'm just glad I was able to see the superest moon in clear skies, when the moon was manifesting all of its superrocity (superracity?) (superricity?). Well, it was big.

At first look at this image, I thought that in Russia, the poor astronauts had to climb the rocket to get aboard.

Then I realized this astronaut-like shape was bigger than a normal human, so that could have been a superman.

Finally, I realized it was probably just some fuel line attachment, or some such thing.

And its shadow on the rocket looks like a skeleton.
