APOD: Fly Me to the Moon (2017 Jan 17)

Post by APOD Robot » Tue Jan 17, 2017 5:13 am

Image Fly Me to the Moon

Explanation: No, this is not a good way to get to the Moon. What is pictured is a chance superposition of an airplane and the Moon. The contrail would normally appear white, but the large volume of air toward the setting Sun preferentially knocks away blue light, giving the reflected trail a bright red hue. Far in the distance, to the right of the plane, is the young Moon. This vast world shows only a sliver of itself because the Sun is nearly lined up behind it. Captured two weeks ago, the featured image was framed by an eerie maroon sky, too far from day to be blue, too far from night to be black. Within minutes the impromptu sky show ended. The plane crossed the Moon. The contrail dispersed. The Sun set. The Moon set. The sky faded to black, only to reveal thousands of stars that had been too faint to see through the rustic red din.

If there was air all the way to the Moon, the plane could have. But then the Moon would have crashed long before planes came about.

A very nice shot of The Moon and a plane, for my Birthday today!!!! Thanks. I saw the moon a few days ago when around full, just happened out the back door. It was very nice, got out the Binocs and had a good view.

Last day of subfreezing weather, for now at least... brrrrrr... but on a couple of very clear nights, I got out the Binocs... I used my father's Bushnells and even after 50 or more years they work great. 8 power... now into typical Oregon weather....RAIN, RAIN, RAIN....

...to the right of the plane, is the young Moon.
The picture I'm seeing has the moon to the left of the plane. Did we get a mirrored image, or is the text simply mistaken?

Anyway, it's a beautiful shot. Thanks!

The Moon is to the right of the plane because it can be seen out the right side windows by passengers sitting on the right side of the plane.

  • Wouldn't it have been both clearer & more succinct to have said:
    • "...on the plane's right, is the young Moon."

(Or is it the plane's starboard :?: )
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_and_starboard wrote:
<<The term starboard derives from the Old English steorbord, meaning the side on which the ship is steered. Before ships had rudders on their centrelines, they were steered with a steering oar at the stern of the ship and, because more people are right-handed, on the right-hand side of it. The term is cognate with the Old Norse stýri (rudder) and borð (side of a ship). Since the steering oar was on the right side of the boat, it would tie up at wharf on the other side. Hence the left side was called port.>>

But it would have missed the point that was being made,
Far in the distance, to the right of the plane, is the young Moon.
that we're seeing a huge range of distances here. If it just said "to the right of the plane" I'd agree with you. But that "far in the distance" part is key.

<<The Torment of Saint Anthony is the earliest known painting by Michelangelo, painted after an engraving by Martin Schongauer when he was only 12 or 13 years old. The Temptation of St Anthony (or "Trial") typically shows Saint Anthony being assailed in the desert by demons, whose temptations he resisted. But this composition shows a later episode where St Anthony, normally flown about the desert supported by angels, was ambushed in mid-air by devils.

The painting was previously attributed to the workshop of Domenico Ghirlandaio, under whom Michelangelo had served his apprenticeship. Under that attribution it was bought at a Sotheby's auction in July 2008 by an American art dealer for US$2 million. When the export license was obtained that September, it was brought to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, where it was cleaned of discoloured varnish and later overpainting and closely examined for the first time. On the basis of stylistic hallmarks such as "emphatic cross hatching", it was decided that the painting was indeed by Michelangelo. It was soon bought by the Kimbell Art Museum for an undisclosed amount, believed to be in excess of $6 million.>>

The photo would have been more interesting if the jet flew behind the Moon, otherwise, ehh. :lol2:

As Cernan prepared to climb the ladder for the final time, he spoke these words, currently the last spoken by a human standing on the Moon's surface:
Bob, this is Gene, and I'm on the surface; and, as I take man's last step from the surface, back home for some time to come – but we believe not too long into the future – I'd like to just (say) what I believe history will record: that America's challenge of today has forged man's destiny of tomorrow. And, as we leave the Moon at Taurus–Littrow, we leave as we came and, God willing, as we shall return, with peace and hope for all mankind. Godspeed the crew of Apollo 17.

I didn't see that!

Congrats, Boomer! :D

Sorry about the weather you're having, so maybe you can dream of the blue skies to come.

It's an excellent image. :)

Hoping to obtain information about it I clicked the "featured image" link but that brought up the APOD of June 5 2007. That has the same themed image but it is not the "featured image". :?
