Our Story in One Minute

Explanation: Do you have a minute -- to see the entire backstory of human existence? This thrilling video culls together multiple teasing video snippets in an attempt to succinctly summarize our history. And sets it to music. Briefly depicted, from start to finish, is an artistic animation of the Big Bang, a trip across the early universe, the formation of the Earth and Moon, the emergence of multi-celled life and plants, the rise of reptiles and dinosaurs, a devastating meteor strike, the rise of mammals and humans, and finally the rise of modern civilization. The minute movie ends with a flyover of the modern skyscraper and a human standing atop a snow covered mountain.

Nice in a way, but I'm not entirely impressed.

The video shows the Big Bang as an explosion in a pre-existing space. Many people who have seen this video may want to ask, In what direction from the Earth did the Big Bang happen?

The early Earth is seen having much the same continents as it has today. Eh, no.

It might have been interesting to see an acknowledgement that we are living in the era of Anthropocene, and it remains to be seen how humanity will be affected by our own quite ruthless exploitation of the Earth's resources.

I like these kind of things. Well done. There is something similar in the beginning credits of the TV show,The Big Bang Theory, except it is done in about 30 seconds. If you haven't seen the show, try to check it out, just for this intro. The music is even fantastic.

I disagree though with Ann. I wouldn't know how you would do the Big Bang, since that white blob in a black space does imply that white light existed pre bang, when the physics of the photon was created after the Big Bang. However the early Earth was shown as a red molten sphere. No continents. Even the later Earth when the blue oceans formed, you could see unfamiliar continents that was located on the bottom side of the Earth with the blue oceans filling the top. Although it flipped by very fast, when I stopped play at the moment you could see a rough shape of South America just separating from Africa. So really the early Earth did not have the same continents.

HI! Today's APOD!

I really like this video. I've seen it before. When I was teaching a course on the origins of...well, pretty much everything (a general science class), I would show this video at the beginning of the semester and again at the end to see if my students noticed any more details from the beginning to the end. No, it's not completely accurate, but it's history in a minute. That's going to, of necessity, miss some things.

Did not like this skewed story of creation even one little bit.

While not perfect its asking a lot to condense over 14 billion years down to 1min and 36 secs. and get anything right. I like it!

How do we know there has only been one Big Bang? Could it be that 'our Big Bang' has blown away the remnants of a previous bang so far so we cannot see it?

The Big Bang created both space and time. So it is not obvious what it would mean to blow some previous thing away, either in space or time.

Meh,

I would be more impressed if the images were accurate relative to the timeline. Then again, the video would have to be longer and the whole human element of the video would occur at the last split second. But to me that would be a better representation of the time since the beginning.

I am uncomfortable with every depiction of the big bang I’ve ever seen. I haven’t seen any that even attempt to avoid the impression of a centralized explosion in pre-existing space.
