APOD: A Flow of Time (2020 Apr 09)

Post by APOD Robot » Thu Apr 09, 2020 4:06 am

Image A Flow of Time

Explanation: This surreal timelapse, landscape, panorama spans predawn, blue hour, and sunrise skies. Close to the start of planet Earth's northern hemisphere spring, the flow of time was captured between 4:30 and 7:00 am from a location overlooking northern New Mexico's Rio Grande Valley. In tracked images of the night sky just before twilight begins, the Milky Way is cast across the southern (right) edge of the panoramic frame. Toward the east, a range of short and long exposures resolves the changing brightness as the Sun rises over the distant peaks of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. In between, exposures made during the spring morning's tantalizing blue hour are used to blend the night sky and sunrise over the high desert landscape.

FYI: Military dawn is when you can tell the difference between a red cloth and a green cloth. The US Army had (has?) a small "booklet" with a sample of both cloths to aid commanders in determining when it is "dawn".

A beautiful example of what you can do with photography to achieve something that is both beautiful and impossible to see otherwise. It can hardly be called realistic, yet it is real without being repulsive the way much surreal painting is. This seems to me truly a masterpiece.

I am afraid I never heard of the red/green definition of dawn.
An hour or so searching this morning got me no closer.
I will check back later in hopes of a reference or link.
Beautiful picture of the day!

<<Messier 74 (a.k.a. the Phantom Galaxy) is a spiral galaxy in the constellation Pisces about 32 million light-years away from Earth. The galaxy's low surface brightness makes it the most difficult Messier object for amateur astronomers to observe. However, the relatively large angular size of the galaxy and the galaxy's face-on orientation make it an ideal object for professional astronomers who want to study spiral arm structure and spiral density waves.

On March 22, 2005, it was announced that the Chandra X-ray Observatory had observed an ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) in M74, radiating more X-ray power than a neutron star in periodic intervals of around two hours. It has an estimated mass of around 10,000 Suns. This is an indicator of an intermediate-mass black hole. This would be a rather uncommon class of black holes, somewhere in between in size of stellar black holes and the massive black holes theorized to reside in the center of many galaxies. Because of this, they are believed to form not from single supernovae, but possibly from a number of lesser stellar black holes in a star cluster. The X-ray source is identified as CXOU J013651.1+154547. >>

I'm afraid I'm not of further assistance in that regard.
It may have been in the latter 1970's when I was told that, and held the pamphlet/booklet.
IIRC, it was about 3x6 inches in size, bound on the 3 inch edge, heavy paper covers, and the two pieces of cloth (attached) inside.
