Re: Submissions: 2015 March

by MalcolmPark » Tue Mar 31, 2015 6:39 pm

In this early spring nightscape image, the northern hemisphere's "Summer" Milky Way rises just before dawn over a lake still frozen after a long winter, the constellations of Sagittarius and Scorpius shining brightly on the horizon.
This image also is showing Nova Sagittarii 2015 No. 2 (cross hairs), and was taken on March 29th at 5:00am EDT. (Nova was discovered on March 15th.)
Also of note, in this image there is a wanderer. The whitish object at the top of Scorpius is in fact Saturn.
Shot with a Nikon D800, 24-70 f/2.8 lens @ 24mm and f/3.5, the brightest stars are enhanced by the use of a softening filter.
Location: North shore of Lake Ontario near Kingston.

MW Core near Sagitarius

This is a full frame 55mm stacked tight shot of the Milky Way near the constellation Sagittarius. The core is apparent and "below left" of the core you can make out the very bright region associated with the Lagoon Nebula (M8).

The Antennae - A collision of galactic proportions
NGC4038 and NGC4039
This is an LRGB composition, with 16.5 hours of data collected through a 12.5" telescope, from a suburban Canberra (Australia) backyard, March 2015.
Faint structures are clearly visible showing the merger of the two central cores. This is a good example of some serious star-burst activity occurring :-)

Northern Lights over Vesturhorn Mountain, Iceland

I captured this shot of the northern lights over Vesturhorn Mountain while in Iceland recently. In the foreground, you can see many small black sand dunes with grass on the top. It's a very surreal place.
