Thanks Art. Newton Longville would be SSW of MK, just outside Bletchley. Maybe the photographer could enlighten us?

Normally washed out by the city lights etc.

Run by the Government Code and Cypher School (GC&CS), it regularly penetrated the secret communications of the Axis Powers – most importantly the German Enigma and Lorenz ciphers. The official historian of World War II British Intelligence has written that the "Ultra" intelligence produced at Bletchley shortened the war by two to four years, and that without it the outcome of the war would have been uncertain.>>

What was the location looking west? Old Stratford, Passenham?
  • I believe we are looking SSW. (More Oxford than Stratford.)

Today's APOD caused me to reflect. I was looking at my diamond wedding ring the other day and noticed an image of the light source reflected off of its table facet. It made me curious if a diamond's reflectivity had any unique utility in astronomy. Maybe for other purposes but the perfect reflecting mirror may still be coming.

It might be fun to try and capture an image, similar to todays, off of a diamond's facet but I'm afraid it's not a facet of my skills.

Well, any shot can be lucky. But this is a well established photographic technique, shooting landscapes through water drops on glass or dripping from something. The only thing that sets this one apart is the presence of Venus.
By the way, I like that spell check thing you have in operation here
What spell checker? If you're seeing spell checking, it's a feature of your browser, not the Asterisk.

Image Venus Through Water Drops

Explanation: Now the brilliant "star" in planet Earth's evening skies, Venus is captured in this creative astrophotograph. Taken with a close-focusing lens on January 18 from Milton Keynes, UK, it shows multiple images of the sky above the western horizon shortly after sunset. The images were created by water drops on a glass pane fixed to a tree. Surface tension has drawn the water drops into simple lens-like shapes. Refracting light, the drops create images that are upside-down, so the scene has been rotated to allow comfortable right-side up viewing of a macro-multiple-skyscape.
