Well perhaps I was a little disgruntled that he wouldn’t answer my question, whether it might be better to see the eclipse from land or on the water from a boat, before running off to sign books.

Seeing it floating high in the sky might be an interesting vantage point depending on the angle of the dangle.

Yes. He may not get down until then with all his closest friends following him.
Along with the rest of us heading home.
So the mountain is to be "vertically scaled" sans chairlift?
He was a little guy but seemed fit enough. If he hikes around Boulder he could make it up the mountain.

I might choose the gondola unless, somehow, I could float up to the top.

Just got back from visiting our daughter in Boulder. On the last day we heard a presentation at Fiske Planetarium from native author David Baron - American Eclipse. He plans to sit on top of a mountain in Jackson Hole to watch the Moon’s shadow race toward him just as those did atop Pikes Peak in 1878.

Quite the story as depicted in his new book.

Of course, film can't compete with an electronic camera, but it could be a fun project. Is it a 35mm Voigtländer or a larger format?

And why an orange filter? You typically need a 4-5 ND for the partial phase and then no filter at all during totality.

Nobody has talked about fire danger. There is already a fire raging in eastern oregon, and it's not even fire season. Sometimes the forest service will shut down access to the national forests (and check a map- it's ALL national forest) due to fires, or just fire danger. And 100,000 people coming to eastern oregon has fire danger written all over it.

The owner of this website (http://www.ncscooper.com) does not allow hotlinking to that resource (/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/dog.png).

I don't even understand what that means but I wonder if anyone else cannot access the link? I did try the link a few minutes earlier but I was also denied access then. :?
The link is to an image on another site, which does not allow images to be linked directly. Sites sometimes do that so that their images don't get used elsewhere, essentially hijacking their bandwidth.

Since it's just an arbitrary internal media library item, there's no easy way to figure out what article on that site uses it, and therefore no easy way to figure out what image the editors were hoping you'd see.
Thanks Chris for your very prompt reply, which is appreciated :).

Hey, Grizzly, I'm in Calgary, too, and here's my plan. I'm going to be at Henrys Lake State Park in Idaho, near West Yellowstone and about an hour north of Idaho Falls; the actual path is a short drive south of there. Campsite is already booked. It's an easy two day trip from Calgary. We had thought about Oregon, but my wife refuses to cross the border now, so it's me, my daughter, and her friend. Her loss. We're going to spend a few days and visit Jackson and Yellowstone, places the friend has never been to. What's more, we can visit Fred Meyer and Jack in the Box. :D If' you've never seen Yellowstone, this is a really good opportunity, it's crawling with people, but still amazing. Anyway, that's my two cents. I, too, am 58 (still wondering how that happened), and never seen a total eclipse. The best one I've seen was in 1979 or so, when the path went through northern Montana and the sun was a tiny crescent.

Cheers

59 and hoping for my second, after Oregon in 1979. To add to the point about it being maybe the most-photographed event, I put together this montage of images (taken uniformly from a set of 35mm slides) from the 1979 event, showing the enormous range in brightness from prominences to the corona, so almost any exposure will show something interesting. (Scale as needed for ISO settings...) Cell phones at the eyepieces of wide-field telescopes are, based on lunar trials, a better option than first seems, and improvised supports and high ISO settings (enhanced by image stabilization for many cameras) should give good results even without actual tripods.

I think it's misleading and, frankly, inaccurate to say, "A few hours after sunrise, a rare total eclipse of the Sun will be visible along a narrow path across the USA."

It would be more accurate to say, "A rare total eclipse of the Sun will be visible along a narrow path across the USA. It will first be visible a few hours after sunrise on the coast of Oregon."

Image Where to See the American Eclipse

Explanation: Are you planning to see the American Eclipse on August 21? A few hours after sunrise, a rare total eclipse of the Sun will be visible along a narrow path across the USA. Those only near the path will see a partial eclipse. Although some Americans live right in path of totality, surely many more will be able to get there after a well-planned drive. One problem with eclipses, though, is that clouds sometimes get in the way. To increase your clear-viewing odds, you might consult the featured map and find a convenient destination with a historically low chance (more blue) of thick clouds overhead during totality. Given the large fraction of Americans carrying camera-equipped smartphones, this American Eclipse may turn out to be the most photographed event in the history of the world.
