Martin, Sorry about the delay -- here is the extended mosaic I promised. This has not benn published yet so you are the first outside SSRO to see the image! Rick SSRO The file is to large to post on <imagehost> without upgrading. I would be glad to share it with someone who can post it. Or I can em...

Scientist estimate it will go nova within the next 10,000 years.

It is known as the largest start in the universe. Some estimates put it at as much as 150 solar masses.

BMAONE23 & orin stepanek thank you. I can make some sense of the multiple images now. Apparently the difference is in the exposure time and the filtering. The original APOD picture that I posted was a seven hour exposure filtering out all but hydrogen gas. The other pictures that have been so ki...

The Big Bang, as I understand it, is a falsifiable event that happened at the start of our observable universe? And a mystery behind it is how did energy transform into matter and where did the energy come from. Is it unimaginable to think the energy released was a result of another universe's mecha...

This is getting complicated, eh? The last link that I posted is where i'm trying to locate the horsehead. If I could find it I could then locate the region where the "hole" in question is. Like I said I'm not much of navigator so this is getting confusing and more difficult for me. Even if...

I meant where in the link below is the area (hole) in question. The link below is an awesome image of the orion nebula. It is completely zoomable at astonishingly high resolution (i'm very impressed).

Unfortunately there is no evidence that black holes spin and I doubt that they do. However, there is evidence that at the heart of every galaxy there exist a black hole. In fact it is thought that there is a relationship between the two. Meaning a galaxy cannot exist without one. It doesn’t take dee...

Thanks Kovil & Harry for adding some more input. However, the more I manipulate this image the more it looks like something is pulling in material. I can see the wavy line you are referring to but from my perspective(s) it looks as if that wavy line is an additional mass of cloud that is in fron...

Better yet Mr. J D Writer.... Please tell me when has our world, galaxy or universe ever been bound by our infinite ability to comprehend it? Is our world still flat? Is Earth the center of the universe? Is the smallest matter an atom? Is the most powerful explosion a super nova?.......................

Ignorance does not an argument make.

I appreciate a change of scenery now and then. It brings out the less tolerant and unimaginative folk around us.

I believe you would only see jets from a gravity well when specific conditions are met. I think there are multiple conditions that expose it's presence. Anyone who can view APOD on this date can left click on image to view it at its highest resolution. You can then slide your cursor over the image a...

It also helps if u enlarge the picture on your screen. I don't think there has ever been an actual photograph of material being pulled into a gravity well. However, I do know there are photos of stars whose movements suggest the presence of one. As well as, a recent effort to identify light that is ...

Environs of Horsehead Nebula (APOD 21 Feb 2006)

What is in the image (Top right). It looks like a black hole or rather material falling into one?
