Re: APOD: Green Flashes: Sun, Moon, Venus, Mercury (2020 May 30)

Chris, Atmospheric dispersion causes the chromatic fringing as you describe above. However, a flash is the refracted/broken/distorted/separated image of the fringe- which you got close to saying above. A "flash" therefore does not need to be above the horizon while the fringe/rim of the so...

Re: APOD: Unusual Pits Discovered on Pluto (2015 Nov 25)

The pits remind me of snow in grass or small thin plants that stick up. When the sun comes out- each stem develops a pit/hole surrounding it due to slight extra warmth the planet gained from the sunlight due to the difference in albedo (being darker than the snow). So... maybe there are small slight...

HI Geckzilla, I am not certain what is scattering the extra light. I will need to check out the secondary mirror supports and see if there is a wire or something peeking out causing the extra spikes. It is certainly something new in the optical path I need to track down. I hope it does not deter fro...

Re: Found Images: 2013 June

Hi Guys, Thanks for checking out the latest image(s)! Concerning the sizes... unfortunately the website I use creates a temporary resized image that is not the one I really wish to be displayed/published (it is generally too small). So when you visit the page http://skycenter.arizona.edu/gallery/Gal...

Re: Recent Submissions

Not to be too clever, but the Schulman Telescope is the largest telescope in the Southwest dedicated to offering public outreach programs (and generating pictures like these). With its large aperture and big CCD camera (with greater sensitivity) I would argue that the number of galaxies in my recent...
