Why is the bar still there?

Can someone please explain to a non astronomer why the bar of a galaxy such as this is intact? I would've thought the bar would be twisted out of shape by the galaxy's rotation.

Chaotic planets? (30 July image)

In a two - or even more a four sun system, I presume the orbits of planets might look really bizarre. Has anybody modelled this?

Is there a formal definition of "white"?

Perhaps there's a mathematical definition, and another which relates to human perception. Photographers will know this through the use of "AWB" on cameras (Automatic White Balance).

Following a moon shadow

Hello Astronomers, I've seen some wonderful pictures of solar eclipses, particularly on APOD, but always these are from earth. But what does it look like from space, looking down on the earth? I imagine it'd look pretty interesting from the space shuttle, looking back down on the moon shadow trackin...
