Re: UCSB: Supernova Hits Star, Results Shocking

This and other factors led many to conclude that most type Ia supernovae arise from the mergers of two white dwarf stars. ... Because of; or due to the fact, that astronomers looking out in to space see that the majority of stars have companions / are in a binary system. I hope i said that right. Be...

Re: Dawn: Journey to the Asteroid Belt

I'm sad to say that this optics focal length thing is really confusing for this astronomy 101 guy, darn it. Question regarding my 10 inch reflector, Am i doing something wrong in that each time i drop in a higher magnification eye piece whatever i'm looking at grows darker and darker. I have the cor...

Reactor meltdown

If one were to place a nuclear reactor in orbit around the earth / On even placed it upon our moon, and run it with no cooling whatsoever so as to purposely have it go in to an uncontrolled meltdown what would it look like ? Would it glow red ? Would it glow bright white like the spots on Ceres or w...

Re: Where New Horizons is

Thank you Chris So my next question What size of asteroid or comet would this be possible / say it's the consistency of ice. BTW Chris, any idea at all / educated guess for why we're not being afforded clear close-up images from dawn? I cannot find any information on the subject anywhere, that is ex...

Re: Where New Horizons is

A general view of Pluto, Charon and New Horizons ... Do you realize that Charon is over half the (linear) size of Pluto? Pluto radius = 1170 km Charon radius = 603 km Theoretically speaking With Charon's radius being only 603 km could a person standing on it escape it's gravitation pull by jumping ...

My bet is that a hard dirty snowball hit that spot hard and hot, the surface stayed hot long enough for the dirt mixture in the ice that was melted to settle to the bottom and that left a slightly cleaner ice to re-freeze on the surface around the impact area.

Re: xkcd: What If?

In order for earths moon to hold an atmosphere it would need a much greater magnetic field Seems to me the simplest way, the cheapest way and the fastest way to accomplish this could be treating the moon as if it were an electric motor. Set up some nuclear power plants and run an electrical grid acr...
