Re: APOD: Cloudy Night of the Northern Lights (2011 Sep 30)

Well, maybe not *quite* so orange, but definitely warm colored. Yes, I understand that things have been done to the image to make it more brightly colored. Some time ago I took two photos - one before a hurricane and one after (when the power infrastructure had been knocked out). What a world of dif...

Any amature astronomer can clearly see this photo shows sun from the lower left It's a really, REALLY good optical illusion. I started out thinking as you do, but read my posts above, and if you've got the bandwidth download the big "strip" image. It becomes pretty obvious which direction...

Heh, I live in Bortle level 1 light pollution. Clouds really DO look that bright here. Only reason we're level 1 is that there's not a level 0.

Re: APOD: Cloudy Night of the Northern Lights (2011 Sep 30)

As one who has never personally seen this phenomenon, I can only say I would be dumbstruck if I were to look up and see something like that. It would be especially disconcerting that it seems to be centered on a position straight up from the observer's viewpoint. The caption mentions "severe ge...

Re: APOD: Dry Ice Pits on Mars (2011 Sep 26)

For example, if one forces oneself to think that the light is coming from the upper-right in this image, and further if we surmise that we're looking at a chasm with fairly steep walls, the silhouette of what appears to be a shadow on the chasm floor does seem to match the edge of the plain above......

The light is definitely coming from the left. Your military left? EDIT: Bah, no more than I was sure I took another look and now it's not so clear... Looking over one of the very long strips, when I pan over to the mountains, where there's no snow, the light looks to be coming from the right, but I...

First, thanks very much to Neufer for the enhanced descriptions of what we're observing on the sun. So, NoelC, did you add the color so i could see what the picture description said, even though it wouldn't normally actually be visible that way? The reason the image is shown in grayscale is that the...

One can't even observe the photosphere in opaque Hα light. Not sure I agree with or understand what you're saying, Neufer... First off, isn't the photosphere of the sun a wideband light source? If so, it must certainly be emitting at least some light in the 656 nm wavelength. Secondly, what do you ...

Gotta love it when the stuff that's so dim others have trouble imaging it is so bright in this image that it's all but washed out.

I really, REALLY like alternate perspectives on things. The universe never ceases to provide more and more beauty.

I'm curious as to your opinion on my suggestion that there isn't as much vignetting in the Mars image as the composition makes it appear. It seems possible, at least to some extent, but the corrections I had to dial in to flatten the image (per the above animated image) were pretty extreme. I can h...

Nice job, Jesús! A very pretty field, and you've controlled the very bright parts well, considering how deep you've gone around the edges. Personally, I like to see a hint of blue-green color right in the Trapezium area, but specific coloration isn't easy to nail down in astroimages. Boomer12k, keep...

Re: APOD: Tisdale 2 Rock Formation on Mars (2011 Sep 12)

It has nothing to do with the camera or sensor. It is purely a function of the lens, and plenty of consumer lenses paired with DSLRs show this amount of illumination falloff I'm REALLY not interested in getting into an argument over semantics with you, so I will just say I'm not in agreement with t...
