Yeah, I'd agree with you there... seems logical that the higher velocity matter is ejected from the center of the spot... but that's just a guess on my part :)

Very spectacular! It's rare we see pictures that invoke such a tremendous sense of curiosity! The second reply to this thread contains a good suggestion for the cause of this phenomena. What a beautiful example of Benard-Marangoni convection!! Interestingly, in 1985 I published a paper on the mechan...

The Einstein Cross Gravitational Lens (APOD 11 Mar 2007)

What an incredible coincidence, the quasar being positioned so precisely behind the center of the lens galaxy! I find it interesting that the cross is caused by the galaxy as a whole, and yet noticeable changes in brightness are observed as stars from the lens galaxy transit the quasar. I would have...

It takes one second worth of thought to be able to tell if two threads can merge without causing confusion and a breakdown of the discussion.

All I hope for is that the mod/mods will not merge for the sake of merging.

ta152h0 you are missing the point I think. Meteors strike randomly from all directions (with the highest concentration naturally being in the plane of the solar system.) If gravitational and/or magnetic effects cause some objects to be deflected away from the moon, then others will be deflected towa...

The earth's atmosphere burns up meteroids on a monthly basis. These do not then collide with the moon. The earth has a surprisingly small angular size when viewed from the surface of the moon. The effective area that is 'swept' clear of asteroids by the earth is also very small (combine this with t...

http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap070220.html I wouldn't say they were lakes... not many things I can think of that exist in the liquid phase in mars surface conditions. I say your lakes are composed of martian sand dune and/or rock slide :) It's difficult to tell without multiple angles of the sam...

I think it's great that you would put the effort in to make this site!

But I think it's also counter productive to include the swirl... the image is incredible on its own, and we don't want people to get strange ideas about what the galaxy looks like in IR!

Often the only similarity between two threads is the associated image - the conversations are usually entirely different. For example, the recent Martian shadow thread, one conversation was about the Heiligenschein effect and the other was about the formation of clouds. Now that the two are mixed in...

Can we please stop merging threads?

It's making it difficult to follow the line of conversation, aside from that, who cares about a couple of duplicate threads when 90% of threads are spam anyway? ;)

cheers!

very interesting.... I think part of the explanation on the site you linked is relevant though: This effect is enhanced by the fact that in the antisolar point (the point opposite the sun, i.e. the shadow of one's head), no other shadows are visible, and thus the region looks much brighter because t...

I think you might be jumping the gun a little on that one :) I don't see any features that suggest it was made for a purpose. Hollowed out, maybe... but that wouldn't explain the craters... Looks to me more like a chunk of rock that got caught up in a very turbulent part of the system's past and mad...

Don Bradbury the movie is time lapse and the time duration/scale is shown in the form of an analogue clock (unless this is for some other obscure purpose) You might want to try double clicking the movie (if on windows machine) to maximize the video, else go here: http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ima...

Does anyone know of any other videos like this one? It's a very interesting apparent camera position... does the satellite track the horizon in a geosynchronous-like orbit or something ?

I'm thinking "supernovae .... burny burny hot hot.... " is probably a very rational perspective to take, being that we are a species which is somewhat intent on self preservation.

They're no good to us now, in other words :)
