This is the first image of this type (the long exposure one) in which I've seen such clear differentiation of the colours of the stars ... does this require some kind of special camera or setup/post processing?

It looks like (at least, the 'holes' do) there is a region of local sink in those areas, so the dew point altitude (the height at which the cloud forms) is reduced in that location by the downward traveling cold air... In this case, the error is seriously compounded by describing the artist as a "scientific artist". Codswallop! There's sod all science in this picture.
