X-ray Stars of Orion (APOD 06 Oct 2007)

A stupid question perhaps - but the center star of "the Belt" has a blue dot in the center of the corona. None of the other stars has that. Is it because the star is so much brighter that it's burned in, or because there is a fortuitous eclipse happening, or am I missing the point? TIA, Krys

Spiral Galaxies (APOD 24 July 2007)

While looking at today's APOD (Spiral Galaxy M83), I wondered ... do all galaxies appear to rotate clockwise, or are there some that rotate counter-clockwise? If both ways, what are the percentages? If both ways, is that simply because of our vantage point, or is there a physics reason for the diffe...

AND, what is the definition of "cleared the neighborhood around its orbit"... It could be argued that if you have a moon, you haven't cleared the neighborhood. So how many planets are left now? Also, using the IAU's definition, how can we definitively say that we have discovered "plan...

Oooops! First two links were backwards... fixed now! It was seeing a picture of the surface of Europa that got me started looking at APOD everyday! I used it as my wallpaper for many years. http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap980102.html I agree with lizzyshoe… the eclipse from Cassini, shooting from...

Don't know what kind of camera he has, but way back in the time of analog video :D , your television picture was created using NTSC color standards. There are 525 lines displayed in a frame of analog video. Each frame of video has two fields and they are "interlaced". This means that all t...

Saturn's infrared glow (APOD 12 Oct 2006)

Looking at this picture raised a question in my mind... Since the rings are not solid and if it was possible to stand in their shadow, would it be dark or would some light filter through?

TIA,
Krys

12 Feb 06 APOD ... Phoebe: Comet Moon of Saturn

How does the size of Phoebe compare to the comet (or fragments) that crashed into Jupiter awhile back?
