in few words, they explode because they receive some extra nuclear fuel (that makes them emit some light, right, so they get bright), and then they fade because this fuel gets consumed and/or expelled by explosion.

kovil, unfortunately all ~112k of stars in the database are no further than 8k ly. according to a plan, the map will only have angular zoom, with every step showing more and more faint stars.
