I don't understand why they wash the starfield out of these pictures. It gives it a very fake and pixelated look around the edges, like someone just put the picture in paint and clicked the background with the fill bucket a few times.

There seems to be a dark spot to the right of the star that reminds me of pictures of molecular clouds I've seen on APOD (http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap090623.html). I wonder if that might have something to do with it?

I believe that this phenomenon was truely visible to the unaided eye. If you look at the secondary suns you can see that there are clouds passing in front of them in a non-repetative pattern. The lights seem to fan out at the cloud line. Perhaps that they're reaching a more densely moist area is the reason they're fanning.
