Re: Poll: Astronomy Picture of the Month for 2011 September

From this selection of six APODs, my first vote would go to Flying Over Planet Earth. Second vote swings between Galaxy In A Bubble and Apollo 17 Site.

By the way, M27: Not A Comet was not the winner in its week, even though it is looking lovely to me.

I especially liked the picture of crater in Sinus Meridiani. Thanks, Bystander, for continuing to post these amazing pictures from HiRISE.

APOD: Aurora Over Greenland (2011 Aug 23)

That big white thing was actually there. By guess is, that relative darkness outlying that chunk of ice is because of "Unsharp Mask" filter applied in Adobe Photoshop. Less image processing would have delivered a better result. What's this HUNK of photoshop job in the middle of the photo? ...

Re: APOD: Aurora Over Greenland (2011 Aug 23)

The green of Aurora is too much saturated, guessing the wavelength of the light accordingly may not deliver a correct result. The saturation seems to be resulting from picture processing, not from the recording of the images. Nice green aurora. It's a shade of green which isn't yet yellow-green, but...

Retrograde Saturn composite picture taken by Ugur Ikizler looks really interesting, not only for Saturn coming to the stationary point very close to Porrima but also for the swirling set of Titan images as it revolved every 16 days. If only the weather been more cooperative and not cause the gaps in...

Are there locations at sea that might provide a more light-free sky?
Most probably; as long as the sky is clear and transparent, one can enjoy a very dark sky in the open seas. Taking a photograph of that sky will be more difficult, of course.

Darkest Sky: The Two Galactic Hemispheres

It all started with the following question asked by Stéphane Guisard: "What are the conditions needed to have the darkest sky possible?" Obviously there should be no Moon light. The Milky Way and Zodiacal Light should not be visible, or kept to a minimum. Last, there should be no light pol...

Re: Poll: Astronomy Picture of the Month for June 2011

Endeavour's Starry Night really reflects the high velocity motion of the shuttle in orbit. It also looks really beautiful with the bright night sky and not-so-dark Earth down below. June 2nd? It feels like a much longer time ago. And of course Lightning Eclipse From The Planet Of The Goats gets my o...

Re: Lunar Eclipse (2011 June) Images

Because of cloudy weather in my hometown Bursa, Turkey, I decided to drive as far east as possible. I found clear skies in Göreme National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It took more than 8 hours to drive 650 km. GöremeEclipse shows the eclipsed Moon in the middle of the galactic bulge. I took ...

It is a very ingenious idea to look for the signs of an eclipse below the horizon and this is a flawless execution by Tarmo Tanilsoo. Very nice looking, too. The image is an abstract patchwork, can be considered as some kind of art. But it is nowhere near an accurate astronomy picture.

There is an even better looking picture with more of the Earth with city lights. Poll: Astronomy Picture of the Week for Nov 28 - Dec 4

A fine selection of pictures, as always. I voted for Phobos from Mars Express and Hartley 2 Star Cluster Tour pictures. Supercell Thunderstorm picture looks superb, but it is related with astronomy a bit more loosely.

Not too much people have voted in the poll, by the way.

I also think this is monochromatic light on an optical surface. It looks like a mirror or lens test with a laser.

I liked it. This is a less imaged galaxy and it looks good. The reddish colour because of Milky Way's obscuring dust stands out.

After reading Beyond's post, I started to see not only the icy crater but also the smaller craters as hovering balls. They look equally interesting that way.

Re: Lightning!

I liked them all, but I will choose the first one by Kevin Black every time over the others. That is because in that picture I see a gorgeous Milky Way, star clouds and dark nebulae versus normal clouds and lightning. It has it all.
