I don't buy the red/white dust overflowing the black base material for the simple reason that this ignores the very unusual presence of a black base material. It (the black base material) would long ago have been covered if it were not being replenished. Some process is creating a very black base ma...

In a frame from the movie link that jaseoldboss provided there is indeed a new feature of some phenomena that apparently shoots up faster than the rocket just as the ripples form. Very interesting, it occurs at ~10 minutes, right at the end.

Yes, it is a ring. And the face does not look happy. The drawing appears to be that of a child. I'd also go with a a young Leonardo da Vinci.

No species other than human can even comprehend what is going on, nor could any human just a millennium ago. Not true, Socrates, Plato, Archimedes, lots of folks could of understood it. As far as corporate welfare, at least launching a rocket accomplishes something, unlike the billions of dollars w...

A good APOD. It is important to understand that it wasn't very long ago, our parent's and grandparent's time, that scientists did not believe that there were galaxies other than our own. They also did not believe that all matter was composed of tiny elements called atoms. Edwin Hubble, largely credi...

Of course the universe started as an entity the size of an atom and exploded in a creational big bang and has been expanding ever s...

The moon is in the last quarter so it is rising on the southeastern horizon, sometime well after midnight in summer or fall. The bright star low and to the left is Sirius. To the left and above Sirius is the head of the dog. Just to the left of the moon is Jupiter. Venus is directly above Sirius.

I believe that the chances of it being a double impact are actually quite high. The chance of any one occurance of double, centered impacts is small, but of the millions of impacts, to find one in which there is a centered double impact, and then say that the chances that this occurance is a double ...

Well I learned two new things today, that’s pretty good. I know that the overall mechanisms of the tides are too complex for a casual discussion, but still the basics should be attainable. I have found that NOAA has the best info that I could find on the internet. 1) Although the moon produces a tid...

Re: Eclipse City (APOD 2009 August 20)
it is the rotation of the earth that pulls the tidal bulge along way ahead of the moon’s gravitational vector. That is a sort of backwards view of the time lag between the passage of the moon and the next high tide. The tidal bulges in Earth's open waters are an idealized view of the result of tida...

Re: Eclipse City (APOD 2009 August 20)
1) Why are there two high tides and two low tides per day? The tidal force of the moon pulls more strongly on what is closer. The moon pulls up water on the near side of the Earth relative to the solid Earth. The moon pulls up the solid Earth relative to the water on the far side of the Earth. This...

Note how the moon's path in the sky intersects the horizon at different angles throughout the year. The June moon (2008) is clearly rotated clockwise compared with the May moon (2005). When the sun rises in the far northeast the full moon rises in the far southeast. Distance Altitude Azimuth ------...

I believe that this particular photograph goes beyond simple illumination and long exposure times. As described, it is a mosiac of four pictures. It also appears that some technique like air-brushing has been applied to blend, soften and contrast the landscape rendering it two dimensional.

To be sure, there are legitimate scientists and researchers who ascribe to the theory. But no one bothers to point out that there are just as many le...

I have to agree on point 5 5) The Sun is in an extraordinary period of quiet. If this continues there are very good scientific explanations of why the earth will enter a new Minimum, just as it did 400 years ago. Actually, the current solar minimum isn't all that extraordinary. It has persisted a f...

There are some devastating arguments against AGW: 1) Sir Fred Hoyle is one of the current alarmists (yes I know he's dead) who also partook in the Global Cooling scare 30 years ago. They promoted exactly the same agenda as today’s alarmists, but had a different reason. "...hopelessly compromise...

Re: Antarctic Ice Shelf Vista (2009 Feb 15)
If the moderating trend in the global warming cycles persists, then we will get less than 0.5 degree C more warming over the next two centuries. If the Greenhouse Theory has any validity, we might get a bit more than 0.5 degree more warming—but not much. We tend to forget that the climate forcing p...
