Re: APOD: Hubble Ultra Deep Field 2014 (2014 Jun 05)

Am I missing something, or do I see hundreds of fully formed and evolved galaxies in the image? Wouldn't simple common sense suggest that entire galaxies would take more than a few hundred million years to evolve to present forms? The galaxies pictured are not unlike galaxies within our own nearby g...

APOD: Dunhuang Star Atlas (2009 June 19)

I read the description of this, the "oldest complete star atlas known," with disbelief. It makes it sound like this, a somewhat crude map sketched by hand, represents the extent of ancient (less than 1500 years?) knowledge about the stars. The ignorance of the author is stunning when you c...

Mysterious Cone Nebula (2008 Nov 23)

In the APOD today, November 23, it says how the cone nebula formed remains a mystery. It would appear logical to me to assume that in the middle of the tip of the cone is a bright star, and that the gases in the larger portion of the nebula are flowing towards the outside. The winds produced by the ...

Comment on "When Worlds Collide" (APOD Sept. 25, 2

I always take a look at the APOD and enjoy it. With regards to today's image, "When Worlds Collide", I wonder why if we are to speculate about the origin of the dust in the system that we would imagine an /Earth/-like planet being destroyed. It could have been a relatively "dead"...
