I am going to pass on the IO image. I have no easy way to unwrap the image so i can re rap it around the sphere. If anyone wished to do that let me know.

I really like the dynamics of the image. Look at the shooting stars. They look like they are be flung by force from the center of what ever is causing the Aurora. Very beautiful !!! Be sure and second click to load the image in it own window then you can zoom into 1/1 and see much more detail. Someo...

I like the way the planets line up. Kind of reminds me of the movie 2000 a Space Odyssey. But as the article mentioned this lining up happens more that I realized because of the epileptic plane.

Re: APOD: Islands of Four Mountains from Above (2010 Jun 22)

Wow what a beautiful picture. Anyone know approximately how many miles apart they are? Just curious. If you copy and past the longitude and latitude (52°52′34″N 169°47′42″W) into Google Earth or Maps you will see the islands. I measured them to be about 6.5 miles up to about 9.5 miles apart. I know...

The largest image is a star field with the milky way and the buildings and ground around the lower bottom and right of the image. On top of this is an i...

This is the last launch for Atlantis. There will be two others this year and that is it for the shuttle. I am going to open a political can of worms here and state that I think the Obama admin. is being very short sited and foolish by not funding any of the recommended missions that were proposed. I...

Have all of you noticed that these new images from Hubble are huge. If you go back and look at the image in the 90's they are all very small (just a couple of hundred pixels on a side). This image is 3,500px × 2,715px for example. COOL!

Here is a thought regarding the grooves. As noted by others this moon is very loosely held together and it is below the Roche limit. The grooves show were Mars gravitational forces are distorting the existing fracture lines of the object. If a meteor were to impact this moon today in a few orbits ar...

However, NASA let us know this: Undocking of the two spacecraft occurred at 7:54 p.m. (EST) on Feb. 19, 2010. So this picture was probably taken within an hour of that time. Is there an ...

Reminds me of the fences you see at beaches that keep the sand from blowing away.

I would like to see what this looks like in natural light without any enhancements. It might be kind of boring but would help in understanding the phenoma better.
