Re: APOD: Galaxy NGC 474: Shells and Star Streams (2014 Jan

Wow! This is the most exciting APOD I've seen for months. My first thought led me to gravitational waves. Does anyone out there know which mass two super-mega-hyper-massive black holes should have to create these waves by their collision? At least by Occam's principle it is more probable that this p...

Oh my! If our planet would look as green as in this image!! IIRC the area covered by forest reduced (here in germany) to ~30 percent compared to ancient times :(

Re: APOD: Super Moon vs Micro Moon (2012 Nov 29)

Even if I appear overly strict: the left image has got the 5th of May and the text tells me about the day after this date. A bit confusing, isn't it?

Re: APOD: Happy People Dancing on Planet Earth (2012 Jul 10)

Being neither expert nor nerd I loved this one. Could (should?) have been related to the "dance" of the stars around the super massive black hole in the center of the milky way.

I've been on holiday. My first guess would have been: Hacked by Tea Party activists: Stars without stripes are unpatriotic.

Same video, different music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6CMvSKsHBo I found this with Pink Floyd's "The Great Gig In The Sky" at 5min.com but thought I found the wrong one. This can't have too much to do with the formation of the moon (blue planet with oceans, cooled continents, even ...

is there another place than youtube to view the link behind the words "impacted the earth"? Youtube will not show that in germany due to ownership issues regarding the music
Thanks in advance,

Hi,
I did not read the link to "OB association", sorry. Has it something in common with "Oh, Be A Fine Girl, Kiss Me Right Now!" or in short: "OBAFGKMRN"? I remember that I read this some 25 years ago. Is OB meanwhile a new classification of stars (sth. between O and B)?

Re: APOD: Huge Gamma Ray Bubbles Found Around... (2010 Nov 1

Hi, I'm just an interested person without much knowledge. So please don't hit me if I ask for a connection between this phenomenon and the one described at http://hubblesite.org/newscenter/archive/releases/2010/37/full/ . Couldn't dark matter in the halo of "our" milkyway accelerate interg...

Re: Elliptical Argument with Jet

@neufer: this video just shows how we waste energy as if a finite planet would have ininite resources. But I don't see the connection between the effects due to heat and those due to gravity. (??)

Re: APOD: M87: Elliptical Galaxy with Jet (2010 May 20)

Hi folks, I'm just a normal guy without any specific astrophysical knowledge but with a fairly interest in cosmology. My question is: how can such a very huge mass have been concentrated like in the black hole in the center of M87? Is it just the time since big bang which allowed the weakest of the ...

Re: APOD: Teide Sky Trails (2010 Feb 12)

Hi astronomy fans, if I follow the link to the Iridium satelite, I get a page describing the collision and destruction of two satelites. Does the visible trail come from a) a successor of Iridium 33 (my first guess) b)the field of debrish of Iridium 33 which is somehow close together (if so, I misun...

Hi all,

isn't (very, very) most of these impressive clouds made out of steam (H2O) used do cool down the rockets before take off?

Thanks in advance,

Re: The Milky Road (APOD 2009 June 13)

Dear members of this forum, I did not want to start a new topic about the same image but have got another question. I am an absolute amteur (I am even unable to find enough "a"s on my keyboard ;-) ), but I am interested in the nature of the very bright and seemingly red spots in the image ...
