Re: Cause of Triple Sunrise (APOD 2009 August 4)

Ok, my explination of why orientation doesnt matter (look out everyone...this might get rough  ): First of all, this is only true of objects at infinity. The below diagram shows an object at a FINITE distance situated at where the colored lines convulge. The object has light going out in all d...

Re: Cause of Triple Sunrise (APOD 2009 August 4)

The second sun in Danamongden's photo is caused by internal reflection inside the camera, and is a common phenomenon. The reflection is exactly 180 degrees around the mid point of the frame. Here is the center of the image. Clouds seem to be very similar to the APOD pic. Though it is a more vertica...

Re: Cause of Triple Sunrise (APOD 2009 August 4)

You mean other than the fact that there is no physical basis for inducing significant birefringence in a bulk, low density gas? What do you propose? Really, it is so obvious that this is nothing more than a simple reflection from the window in front of the camera. Why try to turn it into something ...

Re: Cause of Triple Sunrise (APOD 2009 August 4)

In these two pictures I shined a flashlight on the inside of a standard two pane window. Using the simulation from Naos, I assumed that it would produce the same results as if I were to open the window and shine the flashlight through (I'm lazy...sue me). You can see that in the picture where the wi...

Re: Cause of Triple Sunrise (APOD 2009 August 4)

The fact is that the direction of multiple images seen through a pair of glass plates it completely independent of the orientation of those plates with respect to the source and observer. It depends only on the orientation of the two plates with respect to each other. If they are parallel, there wi...

Re: Cause of Triple Sunrise (APOD 2009 August 4)

In the attached image, I took a flashlight and a scanner with two clear windows, much like a 2-pane window, and shined a flashlight through it and took a picture in the same orientation as the sun, window, and camera in the picture. What you will notice is the the reflected images go to the RIGHT, ...

Re: Cause of Triple Sunrise (APOD 2009 August 4)

Looking closely at my slightly edited version of IMG_9805, it seems each progressing "reflection" grows closer to its predecessor relative to the horizontal axis, but seems to grow farther vertically. Essentially it curves upward. Considering the window reflection theory, assuming that the...

Re: Cause of Triple Sunrise (APOD 2009 August 4)

I opt pretty much for a glass reflection (occam's razor teaches). The distance of the 2 (or 3) after images is decreasing, much an effect of the angle of the window towards the scene. In this pic I have put direct sun image as red, camera as black plane, and the ghost reflections inside the glass i...
