Re: APOD: NGC 7814: The Little Sombrero in Pegasus (2013 Oct

When I invert the image then adjust the brightness and contrast, the "Blob" at 8:00 appears to be located within a slight tidal stream pointing in the direction of the center of the little sombrero. The "Blob" at 6:00 might also share the same type of structure though fainter. T...

Re: APOD: NGC 7814: The Little Sombrero in Pegasus (2013 Oct

Even though I am happy that I was able to capture the deep field around NGC7814 I wish that I could use a larger instrument to bring out more detail in some of the interesting interacting groups. This image was taken for the star stream survey and the goal was to go deep enough to capture the faint ...

Re: APOD: M82: Starburst Galaxy with a Superwind (2013 Jul 0

This is an extremely excellent amateur image of a galaxy! Besides the Ha outflow, there is also a small inner blue filament structure near the southern plume. Also the cap at the top was discovered fairly recently in 1999! Thanks so much for the kind words! I wanted to make the blue filament pop a ...

Re: APOD: Cas A: Optical and X ray (2013 Jan 17)

Ken, thank you for both your answer above and sharing this splendid image. It's a "pretty" picture. But it is much more interesting if you understand what it represents. I followed the "mapped to false colors" link to learn more about what range of the spectrum each color repres...

Re: APOD: Cas A: Optical and X ray (2013 Jan 17)

I love seeing multiwavelength composites of interesting things that span quite a large part of the electromagnetic spectrum! However, I think this APOD would have been better if it showed the optical and the x-ray image was a mouseover, this would make comparion easier. That is a good idea, thanks!...

Re: APOD: Shell Galaxy NGC 7600 (2011 Dec 23)

Sorry about the number of posts, but I did not want to do this in one large reply. For those interested in the "accepted" processing methods that the Star Stream Team uses for stream - shell type detections, here is a link to a paper that includes what our amateur team leader R. Jay Gabany...

Re: APOD: Shell Galaxy NGC 7600 (2011 Dec 23)

II was glad to read about David Malin's contribution in detecting these shell galaxies. He was the first person to discover these shells, as he described in his book. A View of the Universe from 1993. With the help of David Carter, he was able to explain these shells as features caused by collision...

Re: APOD: Shell Galaxy NGC 7600 (2011 Dec 23)

Just to be clear on the method used on this image, it is an LRGB. But, notice that all the color data was taken unbinned. Many of us on the Star Stream Team do this because many of the streams we try to detect are very faint. In fact, the Professionals we work with from Max Planck have measured my d...

Removing the Dust from IC342

http://www.imagingdeepsky.com/Galaxies/IC342/Asterisk/IC342.jpg This galaxy is reddened by the large amount of foreground dust and gas as it lies very close to the plane of the Milky Way. Because of this, we see much lower surface brightness and loss of blue color. I have attempted to remove the ef...

Re: APOD: Star Streams of NGC 4216 (2010 Nov 27)

That's a great image! Thanks! Good old James D Wray of "The Color Atlas of Galaxies" taught me to recognize NGC 4216 because it has "a yellow brightening" between the dusty disk and the bright bulge. You can see the yellow brightening to the left of the bright, almost white bulg...

Re: APOD: NGC 1055: Galaxy in a Box (2010 Apr 24)

Excellent photo. Does anyone know the designation of the tiny polar ring galaxy north west of NGC 1055? I believe it is PGC1164595 and is pretty tiny at .3 x .2 minutes. It is very intersting and makes me wish I had longer focal length than my 20" RCOS. Kindest Regards, Ken Crawford http://www...

Re: Astrophotography

May I suggest that you try renting imaging time from one of the online telescope imaging systems like Lightbuckets (http://www.lightbuckets.com) or Global Rent a Scope (http://www.global-rent-a-scope.com). That way you can try Astrophotography before you spend lots of money on equipment. One of the ...
