Re: APOD: Regulus and the Dwarf Galaxy (2024 Apr 26)

Well I was going to ask at what point we differentiate between a star cluster and dwarf spheroidal galaxy, but thanks to the color commentary I am guessing the black hole at the center may be a factor. Some globular clusters have central black holes. I think there are at least two difference...

I have two favorite images of NGC 604. Today's APOD is not one of them. Let's start with the Chandra portrait of NGC 604: APOD 25 April 2024 annotated.png Possible location of the Chandra bubbles in the APOD. Maybe it's just the right-hand bubble that is seen in the Chandra image. https://chandra.ha...

Yes, that's a nice APOD! I particularly like the faint blue "outer halo or nebula". Blue gas does not appear naturally in space, so we have to assume that the blue gas is green OIII emission that has been mapped as blue. https://apod.nasa.gov/apod/image/2404/DragonsEgg_Prangley_960.jpg The...

Re: What is this

I have a couple of pictures that I think is a comet during the eclipse. I don’t know how to insert them though. There was a comet seen during the eclipse. It was a Sun-grazing comet. The comet Pons-Brooks was also seen, but farther away from the eclipsed Sun. The Sun-grazing comet is in the picture...

Re: Colors of Twilight vs. Sunset/Sunrise

All I can say is that purple light triggers a response from both the blue-sensitive and the red-sensitive rods in our retinas. Consider this color, ███ . The (rgb) values of this particular color is, r = 123 , g = 0, and b = 222 . So purple, at least as far as our eyes are concerned, is indeed a mi...

"shows, unexpectedly, that this red-glowing dust is associated with hot plasma." Is it unexpected because there is plasma inside stars, but this is plasma dust in between stars, as if chunks of plasma were blown out of stars? Plasma is just highly ionized gas. That is, a mix of neutral at...
