Wonderful detail!
Is that a red dwarf in the upper part of the picture, just to the right of center?
If it's a galaxy, that must be some red shift!

Re: APOD: Starry Night Scavenger Hunt (2010 Jun 15)

Thank you Ronnie ! You are an excellent astro artist. I visit APOD everyday, but I didn't know this forum. I only registered after reading the introduction of your picture on 15/06/2010 in the APOD site I have just watched your profile, and I found this topic: http://asterisk.apod.com/viewtopic.php...

Re: APOD: Starry Night Scavenger Hunt (2010 Jun 15)

That's the southern cross atop the steeple. No, don't believe that is it. The arrangement of the five elements is not accurate for the Southern Cross. Rather, as has been said by others above, the four spots surrounding the center dot is a single quasar being gravitationally lensed by the massive g...

Re: APOD: Starry Night Scavenger Hunt (2010 Jun 15)

Bright Star in upper right corner next to moon: Venus??? Dark triangle between Large tree and small green object??? Reentry capsule??? (Not in Original Painting). This is an out standing picture. I copied the jpg and will have it printed up on a large canvas format @ COSTO and framed. I love it. Vi...

Re: APOD: Starry Night Scavenger Hunt (2010 Jun 15)

Great job, folks! I had a lot of fun making this picture on several cloudy nights. • No Saturn •No Enterprise (unless the master put it there) #9 is Hyakutake, but your guess was a good one #11 is a different false-color Hubble picture of SN1987A than the more obvious one in the upper part of the pi...

Re: APOD: Retrograde Mars (2010 Jun 13)

I'd say it's bloody amazing that the stars are as cleanly imaged as they are. Great image! The stars are so clean that I think he used a single background image and worked in multiple layers to place Mars. That's how I have done it while photographing meteor showers and time-lapse imaging of planet...

Re: APOD: Retrograde Mars (2010 Jun 13)

Amazing picture - what an effort went into capturing the complete sequence! While I understand the cause and effect of the retrograde motion, what I don't understand is why the "loop" isn't in the same plane as the rest of Mars' path ..... I always assumed it to be due to the inclination ...

Re: APOD: Retrograde Mars (2010 Jun 13)

I love this picture. The amount of work that went into it is obvious to those of us who have attempted such things. But the best thing to me is how it immediately teaches the concept.

Re: APOD Birthday Collage Submissions

In the upper part of the picture, just to the left of center, there is another pic of this nebula in a different false color, showing SN1987A. SN1987A! Of course! I knew I recognized it, but I couldn't remember what it was. And as I scrutinized the vicinity around SN1987A, I suddenly spotted Comet ...

Re: APOD Birthday Collage Submissions

Ann, that pink blob is due to the addition of the Tarantula nebula. The Hubble picture of it is gorgeous. What you see as a rose is the nebula superimposed on Van Gogh's "star" with the nebula at 70% opacity in Photoshop. I thought they looked good together. It was my goal not to completel...

Re: APOD Birthday Collage Submissions

The orange blob on the upper left is the rosette. On the upper right, I tucked in an eclipsed moon under the master's brushstrokes. In the extreme upper right is Jupiter from a particularly nice conjunction with the moon.

Re: APOD Birthday Collage Submissions

With the larger image, I found the Cartwheel Galaxy. I also found M104, the Owl, the Cat's Eye, the Eskimo, Thor's Helmet and an Einstein Cross.I also found what really just looked like a pink rose - would that be the Rosette? I found what I guess is the Ants, but I'm no great fan of planetary nebu...

Re: APOD Birthday Collage Submissions

You're right, Ann. It's M101.Once I adjusted the scale, the antennae fit right in. It was as though the master knew about them. In addition to the galaxies you mentioned, there are several others in there. The Cartwheel galaxy will be easy to find. Others are scattered about. There are also quite a ...
