Re: APOD: Stardust in Aries (2017 Dec 09)

Maybe i'm running OT, on computer simulations, Recently, I've seen a video on the tube, where A she scientist did a TEDx and talked on what would have been to see the EVENT HORIZON of a super massive black hole. She talked about computer simulations. All gave her some results. All where greatly infl...

Re: APOD: Stardust in Aries (2017 Dec 09)

I think that a computer model is only that : a MODEL, and cannot be used to validate any teory. Can be of a great help, to scale such rather *big* problems to a more human scale, but OBSERVATION is the best, if not the only, rule. Also we tend to simplify problems so we can easily handle them. If yo...

Re: APOD: Stardust in Aries (2017 Dec 09)

What's the general rule astronomers uses for evaluating the mass of such gas clouds in space? In which way they estimate the cloud density so they can infer it's total mass? I can imagine that densities varies largely from place to place, also around entire galaxies... It seems to me a mystery how d...

Maybe also the interstellar medium "wind", acted from nearby already formed stars could shape also, those dust clouds. It seems to me that large clumps of interstellar stuff behaves differently when it comes in such large quantities... Also the simple and also very well known "terrest...

"Collapsing due to self-gravity..." Thinking at all this clutter about the "dark matter", "dark energy", etc... I was wondering if this isn't a way too simple explanation to get reasons of these clumps of matter... even at these space scales couldn't it be that there ar...

Re: APOD: Marius Hills and a Hole in the Moon (2017 Oct 25)

I haven't found it. Maybe the Marius crater shot is for illustration purposes only. The real hole is too small or too far at the horizon, to be seen. Anyway is not the one at the center of the image. Furthermore, we should know how to make concrete, and use it to make structures, all using lunar soi...

The possibility of living inside those lava tubes, it's a rather *brilliant* idea.
But, considering the "air" we breath nowadays, I think rather difficult even a manned mission to the moon.
We've lost the resourcefulness spirit of the pioneers.

Re: APOD: Two Black Holes Dancing in 3C 75 (2017 Oct 22)

Another question : Imagining two BH spinning each other in a similar way ; but at so high speed, mass, rotation speed, angle so that they could only "touch" each other, and "bounce" away again, for the cinetic energy, instead of coalescing... Could this (at least) teorically happ...

The question is: i.e. If I snap my fingers now... is this moment (instant) the SAME BY DEFINITION (not because I can measure it) in ALL THE UNIVERSE? My she-techer (and also I do) gave me the answer: YES Basically, she was wrong. The way physicists generally look at it, when an event happens at som...

Re: APOD: Two Black Holes Dancing in 3C 75 (2017 Oct 22)

The delay between trasmission and receive, it's a thing I know very well. It's the same question I asked to my Phisics teacher at the high school over 30 years ago (don't be afraid Ann: I do remember Moon landings too). The question is: i.e. If I snap my fingers now... is this moment (instant) the S...

Re: APOD: Saturn's Rings from the Inside Out (2017 Sep 04)

I'm not saying that one could do it better than NASA; I simply can't, since I'm not a scientist NASA director... I'm only saying it could have been done a bit DIFFERENTLY. If you think that a hitch to those places is not a thing that happens everyday (1998!!!), why not "stuff" more things ...

Hi geckzilla Due to the longevity of the spacecraft (it started in 1998!!!) I think a way longer "retirement plan" could be made. Just as every probe space mission, I think "the nearer, the better" is a key factor to get valuable, precise and accurate data from the spacecraft its...

I wonder WHY they left the Cassini Probe whizzing around Saturn for so many years, actually so far away from saturn, and they NEVER thought to put in a stable Inside-outside ring's orbit to have to possibility -over years- to map Saturn "surface" evolution down to the kilometer (if not eve...

in this stunning view, in the lower right area, it seems that a smaller area appear trasparent, reavealing something whitish underneath, with a red bar over it... OF COURSE it's another cloud top, maybe a bit deeper than the clouds around, but it appears, to me... strange! :)

Btw, I wonder what are those grey concentric circles can be seen in most of the images, but most of them in the very same place in different images? Let's imagine inside the hole there is a mixture of water ice & CO2 (Hipotetical: I dont' know if those can stay mixed together down there). Temperature needed to have a stable mixture should be (seeing the triple point diags attached) at least below -80°C If not less, since at lower pressure, C...

Re: APOD: An Unusual Hole in Mars (2017 Jun 12)

In lots of Martian "holes" I can clearly see that "coma" imprinted on the soil, just as there is something "continuously venting" out of the crater itself. I wonder if it's not something like volcanic (or maybe criovulcanic) activity there... I can hardly image some kin...
