Re: APOD: Five Planets and the Moon over Australia (2016 Aug 16)

Nice image. There must have been a few minutes between frames here (I'd guess 2 or 3 frames with something like an 18mm lens), as on 2016-08-08, Mercury was slightly closer to Venus in the sky, and a bit to the left. And Leo's tail (to the right of Mercury) is not as close to a right-angled triangl...

Re: APOD: Mysterious Green Patches on the Sky (2013 Sep 30)

This airglow thing is confusing to me. I've never heard about it until the last few years. Has airglow become much more common lately? Has man-made pollution something to do with it? Ann Ann, I think it is bevcause the consumer cameras became more sensitive and there are a lot more wide-field timel...

Re: APOD: Mysterious Green Patches on the Sky (2013 Sep 30)

It is hard to tell on a low resolution video with saturation levels as high as they are but I would guess that it is airglow. I have seen in on a number of my timelapses and it can change reasonably quickly. Here is one example from 2012 (view full screen): http://vimeo.com/52319627 The pattern can ...

Re: APOD: Red Aurora Over Australia (2012 Feb 01)

It was my first visual Aurora and I was overwhelmed with emotions. Alex Cherney Awesome imagery Alex, congratulations! Oh man, I wish I had have known about this. I've always wanted to see an aurora (it's #1 on my 'bucket list') and I only live a few kilometres away from Flinders in the outer SE su...

Re: APOD: Red Aurora Over Australia (2012 Feb 01)

Congrats Alex, it's a gorgeous shot. I was wondering about how this view must have looked to the unaided eye, but I think you kind of just answered that. Without knowing any of the exposure details for this image, I should imagine the camera has really brought out the colour and detail. The Milky W...

Re: APOD: Red Aurora Over Australia (2012 Feb 01)

Thanks for the compliments everyone - much appreciated. Could it just be that lower altitude green-coloured aurorae are hidden below the horison and that's why we see predominantly red? Green can be seen from further south in Tasmania and South Island of New Zealand. Visually the Aurora on 22nd did ...

Starstruck, Ann, Orin and Steve - thanks a lot for your kind compliments, it is very much appreciated. Ann, you got it 100% right with the other stars and planets. I made an extended annotated version: http://www.terrastro.com/apod/Cherney_PlanetLovejoyAnnotated_v2.jpg And here is a corresponding sc...

Re: APOD: Southern Ocean Sky (2011 Jul 04)

The less-than-a-second flare that you describe as a lens flare is not what I and others see as the geo-satellite. The satellite is a tiny little dot seemingly moving to the upper right and it is already visible from about 1:30. It is close to the flare at 1:50, slightly to it's right. I see. I reck...

Re: APOD: Southern Ocean Sky (2011 Jul 04)

Hi All! Thanks for the comments - much appreciated. The beginning of this time lapse was done just outside of Port Phillip Bay and the lights are cruise, cargo and/or fishing boats coming in and out of the Bay. There is a quite a bit of traffic there during daytime too. In the 12 Apostles and Gibson...

There are several great images here! :D Piotrek Sadowski, your image is just great. It is no secret that I often like bright saturated colors, as long as I regard them as "true", but I really love your subtle colors too. They are so delicate that they almost aren't there, but they really ...

Re: APOD: A Milky Way Shadow at Loch Ard Gorge (2010 Aug 23)

Dear Captain and fellow Crew Members, I have learnt something new today - not everything that looks dark is a shadow. Having read all the comments here I looked at my image again and agree that dark blobs on the water are the reflections of the shadowed sides of the rocks. Unlike politicians I can a...

Re: APOD: NGC 4755: A Jewel Box of Stars (2010 Aug 17)

How did the red giant happen to be among the young blue stars? I'm wondering if maybe it was the cause of star forming in a region of ripe stellar dust? I had the same question a while back and found this: Larger stars have more fuel, but they have to burn (fuse) it faster in order to maintain equi...

this is an honest image albeit with a foreground artificially lit.
I meant lit at the scene (light-painted) not in post-processing.

Re: APOD: The Milky Way Over Bryce Canyon (2010 Jul 27)

I am a digital/photographer and artist. I question the veracity of this picture. I have been to Bryce Canyon. I have done digital time exposures at night. The only way you can get the stars is to have a moving tripod timed to the rotation of the earth. However, If the camera moves to follow the sta...

Re: APOD: The Milky Way Over Pulpit Rock (2010 Jul 05)

Hi Robert, Well, I guess there is some kind of a story behind almost any picture. Our passion with astronomy started when my daughter asked if we can find aliens three years ago, she was four at that time. So we got a department store Newtonian telescope and a pair of binoculars. When I looked at Ve...

Re: APOD: The Milky Way Over Pulpit Rock (2010 Jul 05)

Thanks everyone! I am pleasantly shocked to see it did make the APOD. The softness along the shore is not ground fog but the result of the water moving during a long exposure. The blurr becomes more evident at short distance. Beautiful image and place! I agree with this explaination... Indeed, the m...
