Re: APOD assessment poll #8
It was 1995. APOD was on a list of ten or so recommended astronomy websites in a magazine. I don't remember the magazine or any of the other websites. But I haven't missed an APOD since

Re: APOD: A Sailing Stone in Death Valley (2012 Feb 22)
My first question was; What does this have to do with Astronomy? Then I remembered that Human Speculation is greater than the known universe.

Re: APOD: In Through and Beyond Saturns Rings (2011 Oct 26)
Was this a planned picture or was it just a random photograph? Pictures such as this of the moons in alignment are often obtained to verify the exact position of the spacecraft. They frequently turn out to be really neat pictures. In this case it is exceptionally neat. In my opinion, the coolest pi...

Re: APOD: Visual Effects: Wonders of the Universe (2011 Apr
One minute into this video I got bored and turned it off. And the "music" was awful. I prefer (I love) the daily APOD pictures accompanied by explanation. Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one who was disappointed. But I forced myself to watch the whole thing. The pictures were good if they...

Re: APOD: Lunar Farside (2011 Apr 09)
I had always figured there were more impacts on the lunar farside because if anything "out there" was being drawn toward Earth (or even heading towards the Sun), it would have a chance of hitting the Moon first. Is that too simple?

Re: APOD: Cassini Approaches Saturn (2011 Mar 15)
The Adagio was first composed as the second movement of a string quartet; I suspect Barber did not intend for it to be associated with death. The following movement is marked Presto , not a tempo one usually uses for death. I doubt Barber wanted it to be associated with death. It is not "death...

Re: APOD: Cassini Approaches Saturn (2011 Mar 15)
I am a big follower of the Cassini mission and I can appreciate the tremendous amount of time and effort it took to put this together but I am unimpressed. The web video is jerky and jumpy and it all goes by very fast and by the time you make sense of what you are looking at - it's over. Maybe viewi...

Re: APOD: Comet Hartley 2 Flyby (2010 Nov 05)
Fantastic images! This shape/configuration reminds me of the Hyabusa Asteroid visited by the Jaxa spacecraft. There was a similar narrow area which "joined" the two larger ends, although the Hyabusa "waistline" was not as smooth on the surface as Hartley 2. I would suppose many o...

Re: APOD: Hoags Object: A Strange Ring Galaxy (2010 Aug 22)
Sorry, I don't see the M104 hypothesis. I see spiral arms all the way into the center. But here is UGC 7388 which appears to be a Hoags in the making. In this case it appears the process has just begun. Could it not be that the Hoags collider culprit is behind the central mass of yellow stars since ...
