The photographer states he used a telephoto 500mm lens and has also posted a video clip on his Facebook post showing the camera as it was taking the image. It all appears consistent with the photo.

Re: the last question, yes. The ISS makes one rotation per orbit so the cupola is always aimed at the Earth except for specific reasons when they temporarily change the orientation. There's a number of us amateur astro imagers on Twitter that manually track ISS passes with telescopes then post image...

Anything in existence that would show the locations of all objects on that surface ? Ranger, Surveyor, Apollo, etc I like to use the Lunar Quick Map http://target.lroc.asu.edu/q3/ . It's VERY thorough, but you can select your overlay layers... "Anthropogenic Features" will show landers.

But it really does look a little fake. Why the 'halos' around bright objects? Did they use an iPhone to take the photo? These 'halos' are an artefact of the the exposure limits of the camera trying to balance a mostly dark (space!) field of view with very brightly lit planets and spacesuits. Also i...

I'm having a difficult time proving this alignment happened. Where was ISS Mar 20 2015 9:20 UT? Somewhere other than this photo. As one who's frequently tried (and mostly failed) at airplane window astrophotorgraphy, this is an amazing capture. I've never had a smooth enough flight!

A double congrats to Ben Cooper with back-to-back APODs! Just wish I could have been there myself to see and photograph the event.

Edit: I'm assuming the camera is tracking at a sidereal rate, since we see stars as points. Since the image is a composite of 5 images of the moon, and since there are no stars in the "end" photos of the moon (due to the shorter exposure required to capture the mostly lit moon) I'd expect...

And they would be partially right. The final image used Photoshop Elements 6.0 (it's all in the metadata!)

I suspect that the zoom lens shifted (or was misadjusted) slightly between exposures, resulting in the actual Sun images being made at something other than exactly the same focal lengths. Agreed... although I wouldn't try to use an artistic compilation of manipulated images taken with an imprecise ...

A corrolary to this photograph is that occupants of the ISS must have observed the eclipse. What a sight that must be from space! I wonder if the ISS (or any other orbiting humans) have ever witnessed a total eclipse of the sun? :?: It's happened a few times, this is just the first one that came up...
