Hey! A pre-StarTrek Wesley in a black shirt -standing by- the singer. Last i saw of him, i think he was about to find out how to travel without a space-ship, like the "Traveler" from Tau-Alpha (something) does. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/e6/WesleyCrusher2366.jpg <<Richard ...

Any similar image of the near side of the moon?

Aurora borealis in Australia ?

Rainbow has come to have meanings other than simply a ... well, the literal rainbow. It's not entirely incorrect to call a waterfall rainbow a rainbow but if you want to argue it here I guess I won't stop you. I'm just saying most people will probably go on calling the phenomenon a rainbow and not ...

Re: Slow speed distortion?

I am puzzled. The first visual effect I see on acceleration is that the building in the distance appears to move farther away -- but this occurs at v<<c, well before any relativistic effects will be noticible. As it happens, I have a lot of experience with motion at subrelativistic speeds :) and wh...

"The consequences of this fiction have been restricted to optical effects".
What do they mean by that? What other effect would there be?

Here's a close up from ESO VLT: (why image so small? the source I uploaded was much larger) http://www.eso.org/public/images/eso0525a/

Also, it would be nice to get a view from the other side, for a change.

Is it a sundial if it doesn't tell the time of day?

Too far to see from Jupiter's orbit, also the broken high-gain antenna (caused by relying on the shuttle as a launcher) didn't help.

Re: Where are we?

Where are we in this simulation? It looks like there's a huge clump of dark matter in the middle, with various other accretions throughout. Can we see the Milky Way? The local group? The Virgo Supercluster? It would be nice to have a little arrow stating "you are here." We are nowhere in ...

Re: APOD: Dark Matter Movie from the Bolshoi... (2011 Oct 03

I suspect we can not see this dark matter because it is in a parallel universe. This parallel universe may be very close to our, millimeters or picometers, but along a fourth space dimension. If gravity can span this fourth dimension, then we would gravitationally feel this matter but not see it. Th...

Re: APOD: Centaurus Radio Jets Rising (2011 Apr 13)

Good morning! I believe to know we have a black hole in our galaxy too. Does such an image exist for our black hole as well? How would it look like "from the inside"? Are we not inside a black hole? Nothing can escape our universe, not even light. The more massive a black hole, the less d...
