Re: APOD: Perseid Below (2011 Aug 17)
This is a cool APOD, hits home - would be neat if someone ground wise had captured the same streak! For me I was outside 3:30am - 5:30am August 12, 2011, trying to capture Perseid's as the moon was low/setting and before the sun rose. Managed to capture 5, they are "hidden" in this 1.5 hou...

Re: Is APOD a blog? (2011 edition)
In a broad definition it is a blog, but I still voted "no" because it is just doesn't have the look and feel of a blog. This look and feel notion is something the Wikipedia definition didn't really include. +1 I think the poll needed a 3rd option: "Is APOD a forum with a community of...

Re: APOD: A Summer Night's Dream (2011 Aug 05)
Some of the blogs on the web took liberty (without email or contacting me) with what Mr Robert Nemiroff and Mr Jerry Bonnell wrote up and published on the NASA APOD site, therefore I've compiled the below. I'd like to add this image came out of my multiple attempts at capturing fireflies last Summer...

Re: APOD: A Summer Night's Dream (2011 Aug 05)
Yes, well - many of the stars we can see in the sky follow their own paths, away from the midplane of the Milky Way. Like Arcturus. (Is Arcturus in the picture? Beats me, because I'm horribly bad at identifying stars from star trails.) Well, I can make out the stars of the Big Dipper to the upper l...

Re: Introductions: How did you become interested in astronom
Q: How did I become interested in astronomy? Various turning points: Born 1962, vividly remember 1969 Moon landing, skylab, etc. Grade school cub scouts ;Building model rockets 4th grade (1971-1972): Listening to Moody Blues "In Search of the lost chord" while drawing pictures of space shi...

wow, tough crowd for this pict.
I liked it, and for the less technical people who subscribe to APOD and get it onto their iPhone/iPad/whatever devices, they can learn 1 thing/day new is a success for APOD.

Re: APOD: A Summer Night's Dream (2011 Aug 05)
Thx everyone for nice messages. btw, 100% of the credit for originating this shot goes to my wife. My wife commented to me “the fireflies are really active tonight, why don’t you try and get some in a photo”….I looked outside and it was a hot/warm/humid evening and she was right. I can take credit f...

Realy a great pîcture Mike ! Is their a way to contact you ? Thx, I just registered here, my user name "mtbdudex" I use at many forums on the net. I meant to capture about 45-55 minutes of 20 second exposures 10:40pm - 11:30pm, but fell asleep, woke up 3am.....and went outside to retrive ...
