The astrophotographer reports waiting for nearly two years for the sky and clouds to be just right to get the above shot.
Well worth waiting for, and very well done! Beautiful!

Even Hubble doesn't have the resolving power to clearly distinguish most core stars from one another. I don't think that's true. At the core, the typical separation of the stars is around 0.9 arcsec; resolving that requires only a 150mm objective. It also requires very good seeing, or better, a spa...

Air Force One usually does not have fighter aircraft to escort the presidential aircraft over the United States, but this has occurred. In June 1974, while President Nixon was on his way to a scheduled stop in Syria, Syrian fighter jets intercepted Air Force One to act as escorts. However, the Air ...

I don’t get it. Am I missing the obvious? What is the “Oyervides Group“?JuanAustin wrote:i spotted a mistake at the end of the paragraph, "the local galaxy group" should read as the Oyervides Group. I claimed it over these web site pages not long ago since it has gone without a name all these years!

Re: APOD: All the Water on Planet Earth (2012 May 15)
Note that both here and in today's APOD no one bothered to remove the snow & ice fields. Granted, the amount of water tied up in the Greenland icepack wouldn't visibly change the size of the water sphere, but leaving it white really detracts from the image, IMO. I am often overwhelmed by the sh...

I can't put it better than I did in my example with the tub filled with a hundred bottles of soft drinks. Eighty of the bottles are Coke and four are Root Beer. I think that if you reach into the tub when blindfolded and happen to pick one of the bottles of Root Beer, then you really have beaten th...

What is the approximate size of one of these horseshoe shaped dunes? (It would be very helpful to provide some sort of scale when presenting this type of image.) It sometimes takes some doing to find out the scale, but it's always there somewhere. In this case, if you click the "above image&qu...

The light house looks like it could use a bit of restoration! I hope this marvelous structure isn't left to deteriorate over the years. :( Actually, it appears to be in very good condition in other photos. To see, go to Google Maps and enter “Heislerville NJ”. The encounter may have reduced the eccentricity slightly,... Here’s one for you physicists: The encounter probably would have reduced the mass of the comet (being “burned” off or otherwise). This should have an effect on the relative gravity between the comet and the sun. Would this not affect the ...

:?: Hello, I am Cory and a new member. Several years ago, I found a picture of a bubble within a bubble on a leaf in an experiment running on the ISS and wrote a discrepant event lesson plan, "Where Was This Picture Taken?". I believe it was 2003 or so. I have not taught astronomy for the...
