The astrophotographer reports waiting for nearly two years for the sky and clouds to be just right to get the above shot.

Well worth waiting for, and very well done! Beautiful!

Even Hubble doesn't have the resolving power to clearly distinguish most core stars from one another. I don't think that's true. At the core, the typical separation of the stars is around 0.9 arcsec; resolving that requires only a 150mm objective. It also requires very good seeing, or better, a spa...

Air Force One usually does not have fighter aircraft to escort the presidential aircraft over the United States, but this has occurred. In June 1974, while President Nixon was on his way to a scheduled stop in Syria, Syrian fighter jets intercepted Air Force One to act as escorts. However, the Air ...

Re: APOD: All the Water on Planet Earth (2012 May 15)

Note that both here and in today's APOD no one bothered to remove the snow & ice fields. Granted, the amount of water tied up in the Greenland icepack wouldn't visibly change the size of the water sphere, but leaving it white really detracts from the image, IMO. I am often overwhelmed by the sh...

I can't put it better than I did in my example with the tub filled with a hundred bottles of soft drinks. Eighty of the bottles are Coke and four are Root Beer. I think that if you reach into the tub when blindfolded and happen to pick one of the bottles of Root Beer, then you really have beaten th...

What is the approximate size of one of these horseshoe shaped dunes? (It would be very helpful to provide some sort of scale when presenting this type of image.) It sometimes takes some doing to find out the scale, but it's always there somewhere. In this case, if you click the "above image&qu...

This should have an effect on the relative gravity between the comet and the sun. Would this not affect the ...
