Re: APOD: Venus and Jupiter are Close (2015 Jul 02)

This is a lie. Go work for Hollywood. If someone who is not informed went outside expecting to see this, they would believe that astronomy is flawed. Perhaps someone would be kind enough to remove the comment from our lurking "Guest" and my comment too, which I am sorry to say gives it th...

Re: APOD: Messier Craters in Stereo (2015 May 30)

First the kudos! I love APOD and set it as my home page on just about every computer I have to use on a regular basis. Now the caveat, I'm very uneducated in astronomy and physics. I'm curious about the craters, perhaps more accurately about what made them. If the hypothesis is a shallow angel resu...

My first thought on seeing today's APOD was that Ann was going to love this one. My second thought was how beautiful the picture was. Third thought was to save it to my computer. Now I think it is time for a cup of coffee.

Re: APOD: The Big Dipper Enhanced (2015 Mar 17)

Why is this image so popular? I would appreciate insight into this. This image did very well on Facebook Sky. So well, in fact, that I APODed it with the hope that it would also be a popular APOD. (No, potential popularity is not the only selection criterion for APOD.) Sure enough, it is also "...

Re: APOD: Hubble 25th Anniversary: Pillars of... (2015 Jan 0

I've often wondered as I look at APOD photos whether the apparent light and shadows are what my eyes tell me they are. (And the "Pillars of Creation" seem the most extreme example.) Are there really bright light sources where they appear to be, in this case, behind and above the subject s...

Re: APOD: 100 Million Stars in the Andromeda... (2015 Jan 06

Why does the Hubble telescope have a rectangle sensor and not a round one - or at least a hexagon one? A rectangle or square one seems a waste of a good part of the precision-ground mirror. Thank you for asking such a great question. The two answer/comments made the discuss area very special in the...

Re: APOD: W5: Pillars of Star Formation (2014 Dec 16)

But with all these "star forming regions" I have read about here, I just wonder if anyone has actually seen a new star turned on, or just registered it through the last 100 years of astronomy. Does anyone have a clue to what happens, or is it just guesswork? Stars don't "turn on"...

Re: APOD: Moonbow Beach (2014 Sep 06)

Is this one of the things an eye will see, or does it require a camera with a longer exposure time and light gathering capabilities than the eye has? You can see a moonbow with your own eyes when they're sufficiently bright, but the colors are hard to see - as it usually happens with anything low-l...

I am under the impression there are no stars or sky in this picture. Just the worms trying to fools us into thinking we are seeing stars. I have glow-in-the-dark stars and planets on the ceiling above my bed. Always a clear sky over me as I sleep.
