Re: Intriguing science findings - not spacey

I'm going to use "'huh?" more from now on when replying to people who are hard to figure or annoying. It's a way to get back on a level playing field.

The Syllable Everyone Recognizes By Jennifer Schuessler Published: November 8, 2013 http://www.nytimes.com/2013/11/09/arts/that-syllable-everyone-recognizes.html?_r=0 Are there words that are universally understood, across all countries and cultures? A team of linguists has proposed one: “huh.” Huh...

yup. a little too early yet. 10 million have had complex life for billions of years, 10 more for only a few hundred million, and another 100 million never get past simple reproducing slime. This line of thinking is really fun.

Do you think my 50 million 'almost exactly like Earth is today' number, seems like a good guesstimate or not? maybe a billion?

Wonder Full news! http://khongthe.com/wallpapers/space/pearl-earth-229181.jpg next is to determine just how special Earth may be? Tens, hundreds, or thousands in the Milkyway alone, or in each galaxy. And wow! 100's of billions of galaxies out there too. I'll guess oh about let's say 50 million exac...

This is the sort of thing that I don't want the field of astronomy to evolve into. Ann to devolve into? Maybe he just wants to reaffirm to himself and to the audience, eagerly, that there is a consensus amongst astronomers that there is most likely lots of life out there, as he believes. As evidenc...

And interestingly enough, any life spotted will have been entirely dependent on the planet's characteristics in form and type. If we find that 20% of sun-like stars have habitable planets, I bet if that's true, most better be very similar to Earth or we won't find much due to the fact that the perio...

Re: APOD: Kepler 78b: Earth Sized Planet... (2013 Nov 05)

After reading that wiki article, I'm thinking we are maybe the coolest life forms around. And much more common than any of our hot neighbors might be. The good thing is, we are more likely to find life like us because the periodic table seems to be fairly limited in the tricks it can use to make lif...

Re: APOD: Kepler 78b: Earth Sized Planet... (2013 Nov 05)

I asked earlier, but not very well. Um does the periodic table give up any clues about whether there are potentially other ways to create life besides "carbon based"? And if so, someday after more research, we shall be looking for a wider variety of exo-planet types that may be habitable h...

I keep wondering if the Earth is not the product of a series of lucky circumstances that have turned our planet into a quite rare gem of Goldilocks habitability. Ann I think u r exactly spot on! A lonely jewel, one-of-a-kind. Maybe serendipity has something to do with it too. Speaking of luck, we'l...

Re: APOD: Kepler 78b: Earth Sized Planet... (2013 Nov 05)

I suspect that the preponderance of "any" life out there is quite limited in commonness by the periodic table. Life on Earth is 98% hydrocarbon based right? Does the periodic table lend itself to other types of life? Or are hydrocarbons basically it? If so, then life would need to follow a...

I liked the improvisation, saturno. Did you write it?
(Edit - I've just seen that you did. Wow.)
in my defense mine follows the exact format of the original, and makes sense. I'll refrain in the future to be creative if it upsets.
