Re: Where am I?

No - that's too far out on the horizon. Somewhere in the middle lies the correction. Mythologically speaking we are talking very fertile ground for new research there. :D :D

Re: Where am I?

How about something very simple from a new guy on the block. It's more fun solving than coming up with a good question. In my journey around the solar system I'm not getting from point to point as quickly as others but I am heading toward a "larger" rendezvous this time. Where am I going? ...

I think she is referring to a "real" HD 140283 ; a very fast star indeed. This is very informative. I had not heard about it until my search :D

Re: APOD: Herschel's Andromeda (2013 Feb 02)

Thanks Chris - It's been awhile since using scientific notation on my calculator then actually doing the math. I got a wild hair after reading the article to calculate where Andromeda is now (as opposed to 2.5 million years ago when its light was emitted) at its calculated speed moving toward us. To...

Re: APOD: Thor's Helmet (2013 Mar 07)

The more I look at it, I think it looks like a bear's head with it's paws holding on to and licking a honey comb. I like the name Thor's Helmet a lot better and it does look like it. I'd hate to take a Rorschach test. I'd flunk with flying colors. :)

Re: APOD: Herschel's Andromeda (2013 Feb 02)

Help I can't figure this out. In April's 2013 Astronomy the article says that the Andromeda galaxy is moving toward Earth at 1,080,000 km/hr (Vesto Slipher's calculation cited) and is at a distance of 2,500.000 light years. The math would suggest: a. 1,080,000 km/hr x 24 hrs/day x 364.25 days/yr x 2...

Re: APOD: Snow Moon for a Snowy Planet (2013 Feb 28)

Less seriously, you at APOD are really just getting us ready for what we’ll be seeing when that roaming black hole zips past us accelerating us to nearly the speed of light. That inspires a truly bad poem to go along with my bad astronomy: The Black Hole Cometh By : SA Squash As the mighty black hol...

I was on that flight. I looked down and saw this giant globe with an island surrounded by blue blocking the sun. I couldn’t figure out what the heck it was. Sure looked like a nice place though. I’ll have to visit it someday. I’d bet it would be great place to throw a shrimp on the barbie!! Great sh...

“Curiosity’s first drilling” shows a picture of the drilled material in its holder right out in the sun. I thought the idea of drilling was to get to material possibly protected from solar radiation :?:

Re: APOD: Gravitational Tractor (2013 Feb 21)

As long as we are talking science fiction (which time has shown to actually become reality in some cases) why not be open to all suggestions. We may have plenty of time to come up with a viable option with that day’s technology. The only way we will be able to cope with the situation is keep thinkin...

Anyone know if surface elevation measurements are possible? I suppose measuring the tops of gas clouds might be difficult. Surely if we could it would tells us a lot.

Cool! Very complex structure. Swirls and eddies. To me it looks like a giant drain. Wonder if there isn't massive convection going on? It's got to be a lot colder up there.

Re: APOD: The Great Russian Meteor of 2013 (2013 Feb 18)

It’s interesting that we call our protective shell (from the sun’s harmful radiation and other ejected material) “the Earth’s Magnetic Field” Gives one the impression that it could repel or attract a metallic object. We all know that it is a gravitational effect that allows the more massive meteor/m...
