The filaments visible in the image are the remnant of the star that exploded as a supernova.
Sorry, I meant the pulsar that's what's left of the star...

Re: APOD: Jupiter Diving (2017 Dec 14)

The temperature data from Juno makes the Great Red Spot look like a mantle plume...

Re: APOD: The Heart and Soul Nebulas (2016 Nov 16)

The "Soul" nebula looks more like the "Sole" of a shoe, doesn't it?

Here's where it will end up, they hope: https://www.google.co.uk/#q=Juno+course+to+orbit+insertion Lots more here; look for "Period Reduction Maneuver" about two thirds the way down the page, click on the pic and then scroll the gallery. http://spaceflight101.com/juno/juno-mission-traject...

Re: APOD: Juno Approaching Jupiter (2016 Jul 01)

Is there a good diagram of the approach geometry? The text implies that Juno is approaching over the North Pole, yet the bands indicate that we're not that far off the equatorial plane (in degrees anyway; I haven't done the trig with that angle and ~11million km...).

Is it just me, or does it look like the flare/mass ejection/whatever is the last straw that blows away the coma?

Re: APOD: Pluto's Snakeskin Terrain (2015 Sep 25)

The area at the right edge looks more like a layer of fluff blown across a much flatter surface. Also, look at the various ages of the craters! A small number look new (sharp), others (like the one near center, retaining a bit of central peak) look very eroded, like there was some resurfacing event ...
