I see pairs of small black dots spread throughout the picture. Are these artefacts of the photographic process?

Of some interest is the large crater halfway between the centre of the image and about the 7 o'clock position, which appears to be overlaid by a (or two) features which form part of the 'belt'. I find diffraction spikes quite distracting - especially when artificially introduced! However, in the frame of an exceedingly distant object (ie Hubble's renditions of galaxy groups) the appearance of one or two gives a measure of the scale of the piece.

Is the cause of the clear differentiation of elements based in the layering of those elements in the star at the time of the supernova, or is there a different reason?

I certainly agree that the original photography is beautiful, but occasionally am quite happy that it is bent to an artistic purpose; the artistry intended to give the original a slightly different texture, purely for appreciation of the subject. Almost all of the images on the APOD site do that for...

Agree with Boomer12k above; instant impression is of a grinning Old English Sheepdog. Beautiful picture, though.

What a waste.

Instantly reminded of the craters left in Arctic regions by methane eruptions during the melt of permafrost. Photographs of these are startlingly similar.
