Re: APOD: The Central Magnetic Field of the... (2019 Mar 11)

SOFIA observatory has been successful in detailing distant magnetic fields by observing infrared light polarized by reflection from dust grains.
Why is it that magnetic fields need illumination to be detectable? How are light and dust grains affected by these magnetic fields.

I've never seen the northern lights in person, but considering how much I was blown away by the 2017 American solar eclipse, something like this would probably terrify me.

There are many reasons that it is impossible to instruct them to make and transmit such an image now. (And all of the planets of our Solar system would never fit in a single frame.) Year End of specific capabilities as a result of the available electrical power limitations -------------------------...

Why does that seem like the wrong axis for the spin it's describing? Shouldn't the arrow be pointing left (or right) if UT is rolling "towards" us in the image? What in the image makes you think it's rolling towards us? I can only explain what I thought was happening with a cruddy GIF. So...

Why does the supralateral arc not appear circular? I assumed that, like rainbows, these halos continue (In a way) beneath the horizon and were always symmetrical.
