Re: APOD: Perseverance 360: Unusual Rocks and... (2021 Mar 09)

I'm intrigued by a few, randomly placed, very flat, table-top like rocks. It looks like they were shaved. Reminded me of newly cut tree stumps. If there were large areas or patches of them it would be less interesting to me. Of all the rocks there's a half dozen or so that a oddly stand out. Mind p...

Re: Favorite APOD

If I have to narrow it down as much as possible, it will be two. For me, the choice is really not based on the image or the subject matter. https://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap031007.html was the day my daughter was born, and https://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap060321.html , the day my son was born. Of course, I ...

Re: APOD: A Venus Flyby (2021 Feb 25)

I'm sure someone else saw this and has a reasonable explanation:

Chip in the camera lens?
Spacebug splattered on the "windshield"?
Or just a (boring!) processing glitch?

Re: APOD: Striped Sand Dunes on Mars (2021 Jan 06)

To me, it looks very reminiscent of a dark, granular material being blown against the dunes from the upper right towards the lower left. Many of the ridges and valleys of the dune structures are more bare of the streaks on the right, in particular the end of the limb in the upper right of the photo....

Re: APOD: Magnetic Streamlines of the Milky Way (2020 Jun 17)

Can't resist comparing the magnetic streamlines of the Milky Way with the post-impressionist swirly painting style of Van Gogh. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/ea/Van_Gogh_-_Starry_Night_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg/757px-Van_Gogh_-_Starry_Night_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg Yup. Re: APOD: Fresh Tiger Stripes on Saturn's... (2020 Apr 27)

Regarding Mimas, NASA says it's (continuing the Monty Python skits) "not dead yet!": The moon Mimas, whose Herschel Crater makes it look like the Death Star from "Star Wars," was thought to be an old, dead world, according to Cassini project scientist Linda Spilker. But Cassini s...
