If one assumes that, according to theory, every black hole also has an accretion disk... What theory is that? I think the overwhelming majority of black holes in the Universe have no accretion disk. This simulation shows the appearance of a black hole with an accretion disk. Simulations have also b...

On the topic of visualizations, Jean-Pierre Luminet is a French astrophysicist who made this image of a black hole 45 YEARS AGO! The first one ever apparently. Using maths, and a 1970’s computer… He’s still alive and still studying black holes today, he deserves a mention on this black hole week! (...

Re: APOD: M100: A Grand Design Spiral Galaxy (2024 May 02)

Is there even a definition of a "bar" based on something other than mere appearance? Is it simply dust/gas that is apparently concentrated more or less predominantly along a line through the galaxy core? Well. When I look at the galaxy in IR, it doesn't remind me much of a bar either. ......

I wonder why does SSDS fish have a collar (just like APOD fish does) and neither GLIMPSE nor SPITZER fish do? Good point. Well I think that since both work in the IR range, the view changes from dark dust clouds to bright warm gas clouds which appear practically equally bright in the front and back...

Still not much of a definitive bar in M61 at all compared to your other examples. And I'm not convinced of the "inner" bar in NGC 1365 either! "A bar is in the eye of the beholder" it seems. I just told you that I don't necessarily always trust Wikipedia, but now I'm going to qu...
