Re: APOD: Andromeda over the Alps (2023 Nov 13)

I like the bigger view inasmuch it gives me more of a sense that the halos may already be touching.

Re: APOD: Globular Star Cluster 47 Tuc (2022 Mar 10)

Thanks Ann for your response. The approach was incandescent for me the way it broke things down physically and chronologically and so clearly and succinctly expressed. And I sense the approach may be useful in other areas, like my Life.

Re: APOD: Globular Star Cluster 47 Tuc (2022 Mar 10)

I find the structure of globular clusters kind of stunning and inspirationally incandescent.
I wanted to know more of what was going on.

https://apod.nasa.gov/apod/globular_clusters.html provides some interesting information, including a computer simulation, but I don't feel complete.

I also would be interested in an estimate of the mass that was released. (I would translate it to a % of earth mass to give it meaning I can relate to.) To answer my own question Earth is M = 5.9722×10^^24 kg https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth_mass The average mass ejected is 1.6×10^^12 kg https://...

Re: APOD: Saturn's Iapetus: Painted Moon in 3D (2021 Jul 13)

What a great way of presenting a whole lot of images. Nice job on the computer programming. I suspect the same software can be used or has been used to display other moons or planets or asteroids, etc.

Re: APOD: Perseverance Selfie with Ingenuity (2021 Jul 01)

I would like to see a mission with many helicopters scanning a vast area for interesting things the rover can visit. Maybe even trips that take several days or weeks. The reasons for many is because of the likelihood of some getting out of service. What the picture doesn't convey is how cold it is a...

Re: APOD: When Black Holes Collide (2021 Apr 11)

The text says it's computer-generated. Can anyone say what real-life scale it represents, in terms of distance/size, mass and time? Other than the small one is 1/6 the mass of the larger one I do not know. However, this paper may be related though I do not have access to it. https://www.researchgat...

Re: APOD: Landing on Mars: Seven Minutes of Terror (2021 Feb 15)

There doesn't have to be any terror. Very smart, thorough and creative people have systematically approached this project. There are unknowns/scenarios that have been programmed to be handled. A seemingly huge task breaks down into manageable tasks. And the laws of physics are the laws of physics. I...

Re: APOD: The Red Planet Mars (2020 Jul 30)

(in response to heehaw) I think you make a good point. My sentiment is that NASA should be focused on robotic missions. Even when there are manned missions to the moon or mars the development of robotics in these harsh environments would be very useful and necessary. And it would help in work on ear...

Re: APOD: Novel Coronavirus Attacks Humanity (2020 Jun 02)

Back in 1970s during the first energy crisis I was talking to my customer/friend/scientist that worked at NASA. He stated that NASA scientists could solve the energy crisis situation - very creative people, though they were not called upon. Reminds me of the attitude of Elon Musk and his scientists ...

Re: APOD: Solar Granules at Record High Resolution (2020 Feb 03)

Of course, this is a lot of matter moving quickly (although it's still close to a vacuum, with a density only about 1/4000 that of our atmosphere at sea level). But keep in mind we're seeing it sped up 120 times. Thanks. I didn't account for the density. I kind of thought it was like molten metal.

Re: APOD: Solar Granules at Record High Resolution (2020 Feb 03)

I find it mind opening to have a "close up" video of so much matter moving so quickly.

Also a visual of the power of magnetism.

Thanks for the link. That's quite a work of art and so much that went into it. I would like to see a video on the making of the video.

Re: APOD: Tumultuous Clouds of Jupiter (2020 Jan 06)

Things I would like to see with a picture like this: 1: Description of the algorithm used for coloring the picture and perhaps also an uncolored picture. 2. An overlay with wind direction and speed. And related to that some sense of depth. My sense is they are kind of like looking at a hurricane fro...
