Very interesting discussions of wavelengths in this image and how they're mapped "to the primary display channels ..." (Chris). But does anyone else see a winged creature hovering over that central area?

(Sorry, it's the first thing I noticed 🙄.)

To me, the main part of the picture nebula looks like a person, a bit ghostly, with a round head and two dark eyes, head above a narrow torso, right arm outstretched, left arm tucked close in, possibly right leg bent up. Thanks, Art, for the references! Interesting stuff. I read The Illustrated Man as a teenager in the mid '60s, but sad to say I don't remember any of it. Ok, so now I have a (re)reading assignment. :ssmile:

In most of the deep field images I've seen, any Milky Way stars in the field of view are "spiky" due to their relative brightness and optical effects of the telescope. I see two in this image. So are the rest of the points of light in this image extremely distant galaxies, or just really f...
