Re: 1490 manuscript

Not at all, there were no optics in 1490 (maybe hand lenses for reading). In fact after the moon there are only 8 listed things: Mercury, Venus, Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and two I cannot understand. Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto had not been discovered yet. I came here to ask what the last two were.

it's common that people mistake planets for stars.

Just part of many misconceptions that people have about astronomy. We should be diligent and keep our own errors to a minimum - to avoid furthering those false ideas.

There is one thing known to escape a Black Hole - Gravity. Ideas to ponder: If gravity is a attractive force pulling one gravity field to another, why doesn't gravity pull it's field back on itself? What is the speed of gravity, is it instantaineous or the same as the speed of light? it's not actua...

Sorry Makc, I can't see any reference points that match up to be able to check for changes. Over the past three years I have done allot of crater comparisons and searching images for changes on Mars. There are many, but you have to first get a reference point that matches up in both images, like se...

I admit I find the deep space photos and the solar systems photos most interesting, but every day I learn something.

unless that is of course the photo is a rerun.

but that's good for new APOD watchers.

http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/image/0206/jupring1_gal.jpg I can try to answer your question. the light in a circle around the planet is actually refracted through the atmosphere of Jupiter. So we are not looking at the edge of the planet but rather a few degrees inward. On the right side, only t...

that could likely be a meteor with the picture taken near the very beginning of the streak.

But I suggest it may be a plane at the perfect angle to reflect that much light.

Re: NGC 6946 Fireworks Galaxy

Near the upper left hand corner of APOD 2005 Jan 25 is what appears to be a circular star cluster with an arm of NGC6946 wrapped around it. Are this part of NGC 6946? I haven't seen anything like this in looking at pictures of a couple of hundred different galaxies. it looks to me like a dwarf gala...
