Re: APOD: The El Gordo Massive Galaxy Cluster (2014 Apr 22)

With my very non-scientific mind I just cannot help wonder what effect (if any) a mass such as that of El Gordo has on the few billion light-years Universe that lie beyond it (from our perspective). As objects get ever nearer to the limit (is there one?) of the Universe then what happens at and aft...

Fully agree, even I "see" her headless or with her head in the dark. Isn't she beautifull?

Astronomy Picture of the Day Calendar

First thanks to Momoko for the design of the usefull Calendar.

If it were possible maybe in the case of A(Video)ODs, including as thumbnail the first video image of that day instead of the by default image would be handy.

Re: APOD: Circling a Black Hole at its Photon... (2013 Jul 0

Thought APOD page was not updated today! at first glance it seems quite similar to the last one. About the image speed, I suposse it tries to be realistic, it isn`t so? Anyway I would find helpfull, and maybe my optometrist so, a low speed (1/10?) version of the very interesting videos. Thanks to Ro...

Excellent job! :D
Regarding the startrails coloured segments, was half of the exposure taken without filters?

Re: Are most of astr. pict. real for the naked eye?

not a single deep space image remotely resembles how it would appear to the eye Thank you Chris for your comments. I fully agree with all of them, except maybe about how much spread could it be, even among APOD regular visitors, the misunderstanding perfectly explained in your above quoted sentence...

Re: Are most of astr. pict. real for the naked eye?

If some people think they would really look like that, let them. It doesn't really hurt anything, or alter their understanding of nature all that much. (Excuses for the previous not intended post as a guest, perhaps I was logged for too long) Maybe I'm wrong, but in my opinion these "some peop...

Re: Are most of astr. pict. real for the naked eye?

For sure! No doubt about the high aesthetic value and highly valuable scientific knowledge showed in all the images, and all this information let us know more about the fascinating real Universe! Maybe I’m wrong, but don’t you think that most people consider e.g. the marvellous colourful Hubble tele...

Re: Are most of astr. pict. real for the naked eye?

Thanks Chris and Evan for your replies, It seems that the term “real” even “real for the naked eye” was not the most appropriated; maybe “in tune with naked eye perception” could have been a better option. From your replies, the images of the Universe obtained through a telescope that resulted “simi...

Are most of astr. pict. real for the naked eye?

Are most of astronomy pictures real? Let's say real for the naked eye, considering the case that it could be able for the human being to come closer enough to the sidereal objects. Disregarding indeed the false colour images, and taking into account only the light enhancement, maybe even a black sho...

Universe edge POD proposal

I wonder what will it be the surrounding universe view, from a place near to the universe edge. Let´s say in the farthest galaxies. Does it make sense?

Tidal forces are dragging Phobos down? (APOD 3 Dec 2006)

"Gravitational tidal forces are dragging it down. In 100 million years or so it will likely crash into the surface." It seems to me that maybe the real cause could be the interaction with mars tiny atmosphere. It´s not true that the future of our moon is just the opposite? Going away from ...

If, as it seems, Cassini and the moon are both bellow the Saturn rings, it seems to me that the silhouette explanation doesn`t fit well as a solution.

Thank you.

Why the shadow of Saturn's F ring across the cratered ice-moon seems, in my opinion, not to be in accordance with what seems to be the sunlight procedence in the picture?
